Howard U: Rangel Fellowships in Foreign Service for 2024 (USA)

The Rangel Graduate Fellowship is a program that aims to attract and prepare outstanding young people for careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State in which they can help formulate, represent, and implement U.S. foreign policy. The Rangel Program selects outstanding Rangel Fellows annually in a highly competitive nationwide process and supports them through two years of graduate study, internships, mentoring, and professional development activities. This program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, women, and those with financial need. Fellows who successfully complete the program and Foreign Service entry requirements will receive appointments as Foreign Service Officers, in accordance with applicable law and State Department policy, one of the most exciting and rewarding careers available.

Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies Fellowships 2023-4 (Finland)

The Core Fellowship Program is the basis of all Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (HCAS) activities and the majority of fellows are appointed through it. In 2023, the application period begins on 22 August and closes on 14 September. Open to researchers from the humanities, social sciences, behavioral sciences, theology and law, as well as to researchers in other fields who focus on topics related to the human sciences. These prefixed-term appointments for 6 months to 3 years, for all career levels beyond the doctorate (post-docs, mid-career researchers, and full professors). The usual number of appointments is 8–14 per year, with no fixed career stage or discipline quotas. These are salaried positions with associated benefits (paid family and sick leave, pension benefits and occupational health care), as well as relocation assistance for international fellows. In addition, there is a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Arts.

U Strasbourg IAS Fellowships 2023-4 (France)

The University of Strasbourg Institute for Advanced Study (USIAS) was created in 2012 to fund excellent, original research in all scientific domains and to serve as a place of intellectual innovation. In order to reach this objective, USIAS welcomes excellent researchers from all countries and all disciplinary backgrounds. Each year, the Institute selects around 15 Fellows for a period of between three months to two years.

Fellowships are available to researchers:

  • From outside of Strasbourg, wishing to carry out research in interaction with researchers at the University of Strasbourg and/or to use a specific Strasbourg research facility. Eligible candidates should be at the level of at least assistant professor (tenure track) or equivalent.

  • From Strasbourg wishing to work on particularly original research ideas, seeking to apply their knowledge and skills to new domains outside of their current field of work. Joint projects with an external applicant are particularly encouraged. Eligible candidates should hold a permanent post and be at least at the level of maître de conférences or chargé de recherche (or equivalent).

  • Applications from emeritus professors can be considered. Applicants holding a non-permanent position, e.g. post-doctorate, are not eligible to apply.

  • Joint Fellowships can be submitted, with a maximum of three applicants for any one project.

National Humanities Center: Fellowships for 2024-5 (USA)

Scholars from all parts of the globe are eligible; stipends and travel expenses are provided. The NHC will sponsor eligible international applicants on a J-1 Research Scholar Exchange Visitor visa. Click here for details. Applicants must have a doctorate or equivalent scholarly credentials. Mid-career and senior scholars are encouraged to apply. Emerging scholars with a strong record of peer-reviewed work may also apply. The Center does not support the revision of doctoral dissertations.

In addition to all fields of the humanities, the Center accepts applications from scholars in the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects. Thanks to generous support from funders and partners, the Center is able to offer dedicated fellowship support for faculty from HBCUs and scholars of early modern China and its world.

Fulbright/IMéRA Fellowship in Migration Studies 2024-5 (France)

Conduct research in any discipline relating to migration studies at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of Aix-Marseille Université in Marseille, and participate in one or two day-long seminars on campus on the theme of the research project. Iméra is the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of Aix-Marseille University, the largest Francophone university in the world. Iméra welcomes scholars from around the world who are engaged in cross-disciplinary research projects for short-term stays. They expect applicants to solicit an invitation from an appropriate contact at Aix-Marseille University. Research activities must begin in September 2024 or February 2025.

CRASSH: Events & Initiatives Funding 2023/24

Are you looking to hold an event or run an initiative between April and September 2024? CRASSH would like to invite you to apply for support and be part of their rich and diverse events and initiatives programme. CRASSH offers support to postgraduate students, postdocs, and academic staff employed by the University of Cambridge or one of its Colleges to run a wide range of events, workshops, and creative initiatives. They invite applications for funding and logistical support for any activity that will foster the exchange of ideas across disciplines and cultures, forge new collaborations between researchers and other participants, bring academic research to wider publics, or explore the connections between research and artistic practice.

Creative initiatives should be connected in some way to Cambridge (the city or the University) or to produce material that can be hosted on CRASSH’s website for public viewing or interaction. You may apply for support to create a film, an exhibition, a performance, a guided walk, activities that make use of the University’s collections, a hands-on workshop, or anything else that you think will fulfill the objectives above.

Funding of up to £1000 is available for one-day events, £2000 for two-day events, and £1000 for other kinds of initiative. In-kind logistical support will be provided in the form of assistance with the planning and running of events, administration, and publicity. Events and initiatives will be selected for support by a cross-School panel. Successful proposals will form part of CRASSH’s rich and diverse programme for 2023-2024.

MIASA: Interdisciplinary Fellows 2024-5 (Ghana)

The Maria Sibylla Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) is dedicated to research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, with ‘Sustainable Governance’ as its central topic. Their main thematic corridors are conflict and sustainable peace, democracy and environmental transformation. They are also interested in a wide range of intersectional sub-topics, such as landownership, migration and mobility, restitution of cultural objects, African cities, and human rights. MIASA is committed to reduce global asymmetries in knowledge production, to promote female scholarship and to bridge cultural divides.

The institute offers time and space for supporting innovative academic research of top international quality. All MIASA fellowships are residential and mainly focus on onsite reflection, discussion and writing. In addition, MIASA facilitates networking and collaboration amongst leading researchers from Germany, Ghana, other parts of Africa and Europe and elsewhere in the world. The present call is for pre-proposals for Interdisciplinary Fellow Groups (IFGs) for the period from August 15 to December 15, 2024, and from February 1 to May 31, 2025. MIASA hosts two IFGs per year. They are MIASA’s central instrument for fostering original research on ‘Sustainable Governance’ and its connected thematic areas as mentioned above. An IFG brings together a group of four to six fellows, including two co-convenors. One of the two co-convenors is expected to be from the University of Ghana. IFGs are interdisciplinary and international.

CRASSH: CIRN Intesa Sanpaolo Visiting Fellowship 2023/24 (UK)

CIRN Intesa Sanpaolo Visiting Fellowship offers an opportunity for an outstanding early career scholar whose research focuses on Italy to spend a period of time at Cambridge developing their research on a given broad theme, contributing to the Cambridge Italian Research Network (CIRN) and joining the Cambridge Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH).

The research theme for the Fellowship in 2023/24 will be ‘Diverse Italy’.

The Fellowship is open to early career scholars working on Italy from outside Cambridge (i.e., neither current researchers nor current members of staff at Cambridge), irrespective of their current status of employment, subject to visa conditions. ‘Early career’ is here defined as within five years of completing a PhD in any relevant field or discipline, allowing for career breaks. Near-native proficiency in English is a requirement for the Fellowship.

CRASSH: Fellowships for Scholars from the Global South (UK)

The Centre for Research in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CRASSH) at the University of Cambridge is starting a new programme of funded Visiting Fellowships for scholars from the Global South. The purpose of these Fellowships is to provide opportunities for scholars working at higher education institutions in the Global South to exchange ideas with other researchers based at CRASSH and elsewhere in the University of Cambridge and to draw benefit from access to the University’s collections and resources. It is hoped that these visits will lead on to future collaborations and exchanges.

For 2024, CRASSH will partner with the Consortium for the Global South at Cambridge. Applications are invited from scholars whose research is connected to the theme of Ecologies in Place, which is one of the Consortium’s research streams. Applicants should note, however, that their research may focus on any ‘place’, not only one that is located within the Global South.

Applications are welcomed from scholars carrying out research on any topic connected to the broad themes of sustainability, human-environmental interactions, resource management, and the differential impacts of climate change. Applicants should primarily be working within the arts, humanities, or social sciences, but interdisciplinary approaches that involve collaboration with the sciences or engineering are also very welcome. Up to three Visiting Fellows will be selected each year from different countries in the Global South.

There are other visiting fellowships possible at CRASSH, but they must be self-funded.
