CFP Media Culture & Society: Argentina & Latin America (Argentina)

This will be the fourth annual conference organized by the Center for the Study of Media and Society in Argentina (MESO) on the interactions between media, culture and society. This fourth event is sponsored by the Center for Global Culture and Communication at Northwestern University.

Submissions should contribute to ongoing conversations about media, culture, and society in empirical, theoretical or methodological ways. They might also broaden our knowledge about the relationship between media, culture, and society at the national and regional level. Articles may refer to different aspects of communication, media, and cultural goods and services in the areas of journalism, entertainment -cinema, theater, television, music, etc. – advertising and marketing, public relations, social media, and video games, among others.

CFP Teaching & Learning L2 Pragmatics (UK)

This UK-based international conference is dedicated to second language pragmatic development in learning and teaching. We particularly welcome papers focussing on Chinese as a second language, or Chinese learners of English at home or in study abroad contexts.

Papers and posters are invited from researchers or practitioners in any field of language learning and teaching, to focus on an aspect of the conference theme:
• The teaching and learning of L2 Chinese pragmatics at home or study abroad
• The teaching and learning of pragmatics for Chinese English language learners at home or study abroad
• Effective ways of teaching pragmatics in the classroom
• Using ICT for pragmatic development
• Pre departure and in country pragmatics instruction
• Testing and assessing pragmatic development

The ‘good’ interculturalist yesterday, today and tomorrow: Everyday life-theory-research-policy-practice

The word ‘intercultural’ has been in use in research and practice in different parts of the world for many decades. In daily life, it is less used compared to ‘competitors’ such as multicultural or, increasingly, diversity. Interdisciplinary at heart, like all concepts, the word ‘intercultural’ is also very polysemic and politically driven.

Our interest in the notion of the ‘intercultural’ in this conference rests on the root of the word, ‘inter’, which hints at reciprocity, being located/occurring/existing between.

 This conference serves as a platform to discuss what it means to be a ‘good’ interculturalist today. We expect many and varied (discordant) voices to meet during the conference. The past and future can also be considered, in diachronic and/or synchronic perspectives. The following broad contexts, which often overlap, will be examined: everyday life, theory, research, policy and practice. The micro-contexts of (language) education, teacher education, internationalization of education, business, health care, intercultural couplehood, are of interest amongst others.

CFP Communication, Ecology & Cultural Heritage (China)

Conferences4th Symposium on Communication and Public: Communication, Ecology, and Cultural Heritage, Penn Wharton China Center, Beijing, China, June 7 and 8, 2018. Deadline: February 28, 2018.

The call for submissions of paper abstracts of 800-1000 words is now open. The analysis could focus on media and communication technologies and their uses in the protection of ecology and cultural heritage or on practices of cultural heritage and environmental protection as media of communication. The symposium organizers encourage empirical studies that examine the practices and cultures of both citizens and institutions.

Submissions should be emailed by February 28, 2018. Authors will be notified of results by March 10, 2018. Organizers will cover accommodation and meals in Beijing, as well as domestic travel in China. (International travel cannot be covered.)

All papers should be written and presented in English. Selected papers will be published as a special issue in Communication and the Public.

CFP Globalization & Culture (USA)

The Working Group on Globalization and Culture of the Cultural Studies Association would like to invite submissions for the 16th Annual Meeting of the Cultural Studies Association (U.S.), at to be held on May 31-June 2, 2018 at the campus of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. We welcome a wide range of papers addressing the broad nexus between globalization and culture. This year we aim to constitute at least two panels:

General Call: The first is an open call for papers for a panel on Globalization and Culture broadly conceived. We invite interdisciplinary papers that explore the relationships among circuits of production and consumption, the movement of people, social inequalities and collective identities, globalizations from “above” and “below,” new/emerging media and technologies, transnationalism, and cultural industries. In addition, proposals broadly addressing any aspect of globalization and culture are most welcome.

Theme Panel: The second will focus on the conference theme of “Interventions.” We seek interdisciplinary papers that pull from philosophy, sociology, economics, political science, literature, critical pedagogy and/or cultural studies, among others.

Opportunity #1:
U.S. East Coast CMM Learning Exchange
In collaboration with the MBA program at Assumption College in Worchester, Massachusetts, our first Learning Exchange will occur on Friday and Saturday, April 20-21, 2018.  The theme is CMM in the World:  Cases for Social Change.  The cost is $50 and includes a light dinner and a continental breakfast.   We are soliciting case studies and envision our time together as a collaborative inquiry to strengthen our individual and collective practices around social responsibility.  For more information, contact ra.frkalATassumption.edu

Opportunity #2:
2018 Fellows Program:  Call for Proposals
In partnership with Columbia University, we are seeking innovative proposals that “take a communication perspective” and draw on CMM in ways that address patterns of inequality and that foster inclusion.  Applications are due by March 15 and notification of acceptance will take place in mid-April.  Our 2018 Fellows will present their work at the 2018 Learning Exchange in Oracle, Arizona in late October.  Fellows recipients will also receive a $500 honorarium and money toward their travel expenses to the Learning Exchange in Arizona.  For more information and for the application, contact bartonbuechnerATgmail.com

The CMM Institute will travel back to the beautiful Sonoran desert where we have had past Learning Exchanges to explore the theme of “Building Community.”   We will provide more information in the weeks and months to come but, for now, save the date.

CFP ECREA: Centres & Peripheries (Switzerland)

ConferencesThe European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA) in partnership with USI Università della Svizzera italiana call for proposals to be presented at the 7th European Communication Conference, to be held in Lugano, Switzerland, from 31 October to 3 November 2018. The Conference has chosen the key theme of “Centres and Peripheries: Communication, Research, Translation.” Deadline: 28 February 2018.

First, the conference examines the issues of “core” and “margins”, inviting scholars to stretch the boundaries of media and communication research as an academic discipline. We welcome presentation of research that seeks to take communication and media studies to new territories and new fields of application.

Second, the key conference theme of centres and peripheries means reconsidering geographical, cultural and linguistic borders or boundaries. Many areas of media and communication research have been dominated by American and European scholarship, but these traditions can learn methodological and theoretical insights coming, for example, from Asian, South American and African research.

CFP Language, Translation & Migration (UK)

The modern world is interconnected, mobile, multilingual and diverse. Linguistic diversity however does not indicate linguistic equality. On the contrary, the linguistically diverse nature of contemporary societies has implications for social justice, with potentially differential access to resources and the public sphere. In this context the politics of language are a significant factor for the promotion of social cohesion. Research has repeatedly shown that linguistic and ethnic minorities are disadvantaged in interaction with institutions. This two-day conference brings together scholars and practitioners from different professional and disciplinary backgrounds to discuss the role of language as a key factor in globalised societies.

The conference will be followed by a public summit focusing on the relationship between language, translation, social mobility and social cohesion. Participants will include scholars from the Humanities and Social Sciences as well as representatives from the voluntary sector, the creative industries, non-governmental organisations and policy makers.

We invite contributions which encourage interdisciplinary dialogue between scholars and practitioners in sociolinguistics and applied linguistics, translation studies, modern languages, sociology, health, legal studies and other areas in which language behaviour and language politics play a key role both as research objects and professional practices.

CFP Conference on the Sociolinguistics of Immigration 2018 (Italy)
