ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design/deliver Year 1 project-based module of the Global Citizenship and Research-led learning;
  • Design/deliver modules/activities of sustainable development education/entrepreneurship education/digital literacy education/social responsibility education/intercultural competence education;
  • Promote the innovative practices of learning and teaching via technologies such as AI, big data, etc.;
  • Conduct professional practices that contribute to students’ transition, transformation, and transferring of learning mode and skills;
  • Participate in the design and deliver of projects and activities of LIFE, including credit and non-credit modules, workshops, and seminars at both UG and PG levels;
  • Support projects and activities of LIFE according to the planning of the department and work with other team members actively and professionally;
  • Work closely with students to explore innovative practices for learning and teaching;
  • Supervise Master’s students for their thesis writing;
  • Provide academic advising to students.

Glotov, S. (2023). Film literacy and intercultural dialogue: Focus on cultural representation. (Doctoral dissertation, Tampere University, Finland).

In his dissertation, Sergei Glotov links “film literacy with intercultural education that can support open and respectful intercultural dialogue between people of different cultural backgrounds…intercultural film literacy education is introduced as the link between film literacy and intercultural education…Overall, the research advocates for looking closely at the messages of cultural representation we receive from audio-visual media and being critical and reflective about them, by studying how these messages are created and broadcasted, as well as challenging them through intercultural dialogue and the actual experiences of other people.” It seems likely this would be useful to those teaching about intercultural dialogue, especially those who use films in the classroom.

IMéRA Fellowships 2024-5 (France)

For the year 2024-25, Iméra, the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of Aix-Marseille University, is opening 14 resident fellowships ranging between 5 and 10 months, targeting academics and/or artists. The fellowships are distributed over four programs (Arts & Sciences: Indisciplined Knowledge; Interdisciplinary Explorations; Mediterranean; Necessary Utopias).

Prerequisites common to all available fellowships and that must be taken into account before the eligibility criteria specific to each fellowship include:

  • An active knowledge of French and/or English (written and spoken) is essential.

  • Candidates commit to participate in the activities planned with the other fellows and the scientific team of Iméra.

Eric de Rosny and the Necessary Tradition-Modernity Dialogue in Africa

Perret-Clermont, A. N., Morerod, J. D., & Blanc, J. (2022). Cultures et guérisons: Éric de Rosny–L’intégrale [Cultures and healings: The complete Éric de Rosny]. Livreo-Alphil. (boxed set in 3 volumes)

Eric de Rosny was a French anthropologist and Jesuit who started as a teacher and then devoted his life to further intercultural understanding between Africa (and in particular Cameroon) and the French speaking “West” (in particular France). He published several books (Healers in the Night, the most famous, has been translated into English and several other languages). He paid careful attention to local traditions, in particular to traditional healing practices and their embeddedness in local worldviews, knowledge and creeds (including witchcraft). He invested a lot of energy to protect traditional healers. But he was also concerned to further the understanding of present day rapid transformations of all kinds (for example: growing cities, the desire of young people to migrate, development of new churches). His papers were dispersed across many (often small) journals. Now that his papers have been collected and sorted by chronological date, they offer the opportunity to follow him step by step, documenting and sharing his experience, as he tries to enter this world in Douala, and then sees himself adopted by the local community and integrated as one of the “wise men” (beyum ba bato).

The Communication Department at Utah Tech University is seeking an enthusiastic and well-qualified individual for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Communication, with an emphasis on intercultural communication, to begin Fall 2024 semester. Successful candidates will be comfortable teaching intercultural communication courses, along with various other intersections of identity-based communication (e.g., gender, globalization, and criticism). Special consideration will be paid to those who specialize in rhetorical/critical methods. The successful candidate also will coordinate the curriculum for the department’s foundational courses in the intercultural communication area. Tenure track faculty at UT teach a 4/4 teaching load. While the primary considerations for tenure at UT are currently teaching and service, having an active research trajectory with publications and/or conference presentations is a component of tenure and promotion.

During this workshop, the Educators’ Guide to Depolarisation will be presented, as well as navigating through some of its exercises, designed to encourage and equip teachers with methods for facilitating difficult conversations on controversial or polarising topics with their students. In addition, educational materials from the project Depolarisation Activism for Resilient Europe (DARE) will also be presented.

Maja Nenadovic is a practitioner and educator with 20 years of experience of working in the civic education, critical pedagogy, human rights education, Holocaust education and youth civic engagement fields. Next to designing original civic education and human rights education materials, she coordinated and facilitated several long-term civic education projects in the region of Western Balkans.

The NECE (Networking European Civic Education) Campus is an all-year-round online event series that provides a platform for educators, policymakers, civil society actors, and experts in citizenship education to learn, and exchange practices, research, tools, and methods related to democratic engagement and civic education. The series includes a diverse set of presentations, workshops, and capacity-building activities. It’s organised into functional and thematic tracks to cater to the needs of civic educators, covering a broad range of topics.
