The Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge wishes to appoint a part-time Research Associate (0.6 fte) to work on a new large-scale EC Horizon 2020 project with nine partners, led by Dr Fiona Maine. The project works in schools across Europe to support the development of young people’s cultural literacy, which is defined as a set of competences and dispositions moving beyond understanding of European culture into an awareness of one’s own cultural identities and those of others.  It will work with teachers from primary and secondary schools to develop a programme of cultural literacy learning, focusing on the development of dialogue and argumentation as children read and respond to visual narratives of European origin.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate experience of working with children and young people in schools, recording and analysing classroom discussions, particularly focusing on dialogue. They will provide support to European colleagues in the development of a Cultural Analysis Framework to enable the selection of cultural texts for the project and help recruit and work with suitable participants to develop a Cultural Literacy Learning Programme, whilst leading on the collection of data in schools. The successful candidate will also work with a European team to develop and apply consistent coding approaches for the analysis of classroom dialogue.

CFP Global Approaches to Multilingualism (UK)

ConferencesCall for papers for the conference on Global approaches to multilingualism and standardisation. Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge, 16-18 April 2018. Deadline: 30 November 2017.

Proposals are welcomed from Early Career Researchers on any of the conference themes, or anything else that relates to standard languages and language standardization. Proposals are particularly encouraged regarding linguistic contexts which comparatively have received little attention from work on language standardization, or which consider theoretical or methodological issues.

This conference is being organised as part of the AHRC-funded project Multilingualism: Empowering Individuals, Transforming Societies (MEITS).

Thanks to the generosity of the Historical Sociolinguistics Research and Training Program, funded by the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO), we hope to make four awards of up to €375 per person to cover accommodation and travel expenses.

U Cambridge Job Ad: Centre for Educational Dialogue Research (UK)

We wish to appoint a full-time Research Associate or a part-time (0.7 FTE) Senior Research Associate to support and develop the research of the Centre for Educational Dialogue Research (CEDiR) at the Faculty of Education in central Cambridge.

The appointed researcher will work closely with Professor Rupert Wegerif to develop the research base of dialogic education at Cambridge, with particular interests in dialogic education with technology, global dialogue for peace, and classroom dialogue. A key part of the work will be pro-actively seeking funding and bid writing. In addition there will be writing articles for high impact journals and practitioner journals, and working to organise research events and animate a research community which is both local and international. You will help to develop and seek funding for projects assessing group thinking. You will also develop and seek funding for projects using the internet to promote and sustain international dialogue.

Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant subject, and have relevant qualitative and quantitative research training and experience. You should have a good understanding of dialogic education and some experience of related research. You should also demonstrate evidence of contributing to the development of bids and of writing for publication. For appointment as a Senior Research Associate you will have substantial experience as a Research Associate, along with proven ability to manage research groups and projects, and evidence of successful bids for research funding.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.

CRASSH invites applications for a Communications Manager to support, co-ordinate and deliver the Centre’s publicity and communications. CRASSH is one of the biggest and most active research centres in Europe with research programmes that produce over 300 research events each year, from high-profile public lectures to small, research intensive workshops. The Communications Manager is a core member of the CRASSH team, working across all programmes to define key communications objectives, aims and messages of the Centre.

The successful applicant will be educated to degree level and will be responsible for the Centre’s internal and external communications. She or he will be experienced in the uses of social media and print publicity and able to develop these to meet the needs of existing and new programmes. She or he will be editor of the CRASSH website, with overall responsibility for the content, writing copy and co-ordinating material from other content providers (academics, researchers, programme and project support staff). Experience with online and design software such as InDesign, Photoshop is required. A confident communications professional, you will represent the Centre at public events, build networks with School and central University departments, and be adept at leading and working within the CRASSH team as required.

Start date is as soon as possible. The role is funded for 12 months in the first instance with the possibility of renewal.

About the Fellowship
Years ago the minds behind the AdR Fellowship recognized three things: One, that there is an urgent need to bring innovation to the field of cross-cultural dialogue; two that a business mindset can be of great value to build tangible impact; and three that there is an exciting opportunity to better expose social entrepreneurs to the knowledge and analytical frameworks offered by social sciences. “Distinct fields such as dialogue and entrepreneurship cannot afford to exist in isolated ivory towers” says Ariane de Rothschild. The continuing disconnect between social sciences and business prevents the emergence of sustainable solutions to tackle the world’s most pressing problems. How can you design solutions for a problem if you lack an understanding of the historical and political context of the people you are trying to help? Thus since 2009, the AdR Fellows through this unique design thinking model have engaged with a wide range of thinkers and practionners from universities such as Columbia, Cambridge, the University of Montreal, the School of Oriental and African Studies, the London School of Economics and Cornell.

Study abroad in England

Seminar in Freedom of Speech. COMM 3983/5193.

This special three-week seminar will be offered July 7-July 27, 2013 at the University of Cambridge (ten days) and the University of Oxford (ten days). It is open to undergraduates, graduate students, and other members of the intellectual community. The seminar will focus on the history and philosophy of freedom of expression, examining the arguments about individual liberty and community order in republics from Plato to the present. We will be reading selected works and discussing the ideas of writers such as Plato, Machiavelli, Milton, Spinoza, Hobbes, Locke, Montesquieu, Hume, Burgh, Price, Priestley, Blackstone, Bentham, Mill, Jefferson, Madison, Wortman, Kant, Constant, Tocqueville, Hegel, Grimke, Schofield, Schroeder, Chafee, Meiklejohn, Marcuse, Emerson, Haiman, Gates, MacKinnon and others. Seminar members will receive the reading materials in late May and will have ample opportunity to do additional background reading before leaving for Cambridge.

Students also will be offered an additional course COMM 4903/5903 Special Problems to pursue individual research that can best be investigated while at Oxford and Cambridge on such topics as British Public Address, Rhetoric of Irish Independence, BBC Programming, Foreign Films, British Rhetorical Theory, Legal Communication, International NGOs, and Communication and Culture. The curriculum will be designed with each student before departure to meet their intellectual and educational needs.

Accommodations for students will be in Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and Brasenose College, Oxford (private room). There will be two field trips to London, where we will visit the Houses of Parliament, the Royal Courts of Justice, the Inns of Court, the Tower of London, and Hyde Park Speakers’ Corner, as well as day trips to Ely and to Warwick Castle and Stratford-upon-Avon for a Shakespeare Tour.
