The Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) at the University of Oxford is seeking to appoint a Quantitative Researcher with expertise in the statistical analysis of quantitative data on migration and migrants for a period of one year, with the possibility of extension. The post holder will work on analysing quantitative data from different research projects and will be accountable to the Principal Investigator of the projects, Professor Carlos Vargas-Silva. The projects in which the researcher will work include Aligning Migration Management and the Migration Development Nexus, a large research project with the core ambition of creating new knowledge on migration, development and policy.

Wabash Democracy and Public Discourse, an interdisciplinary program at Wabash College, is pleased to announce a two-year, post-doctoral Fellowship in Dialogue and Deliberation to begin July 1, 2023. The area of concentration is open to a broad range of fields including but not limited to communication, rhetoric, anthropology, economics, cultural studies, political science, or sociology; however, the candidate’s teaching and research must connect the intersections of dialogue and deliberation, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Wabash Democracy and Public Discourse (WDPD) is an undergraduate research and practice program that trains students to research, design, and facilitate public dialogue and deliberations on a range of issues. The post-doctoral fellow will join an enthusiastic team of a faculty director, program associate staff member, and undergraduate research Democracy Fellows. WDPD has partnered with campus organizations and communities to host dialogues and deliberations on varying topics including those relating to race, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

U Edinburgh Postdoc: Situating International and Global Mathematics (UK)

You will join the UKRI Frontier Research Guarantee project ‘Situating International and Global Mathematics’ (SIGMA), investigating the global history of professional mathematical research in the twentieth century, working primarily on either Institutions (using methods of archival and institutional history to analyse how mathematicians organised their research and professional communities across new scales in the twentieth century) or Infrastructures (using methods of critical information studies to develop new database-supported approaches to characterising the infrastructures of long-distance and large-scale mathematical research). You will use a variety of historical research methods, coordinate events and research networks, and collaboratively develop resources and publications as part of the project team.

It is not necessary for candidates to have experience in history of mathematics, modern history, or other specific project fields and methodologies, provided you demonstrate other relevant skills and knowledge and are interested and willing to undertake further training as necessary.

The Post-doctoral Research Fellow will develop and conduct research within the context of a collaborative research project on ‘Good Citizens, Terrible Times: Community, Courage and Compliance in and beyond the Holocaust’, funded by the AHRC and the DFG. The post is funded for 27 months. The Research Fellow will develop and carry out a discrete research project that will form part of and make a significant contribution to a wider, collaborative research project on conceptions and practices of citizenship and community in different areas of Europe during the Holocaust, as these variously affected compliance with state or occupation policies, or inspired sympathy with those who were persecuted.

The Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication (CARGC) at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a “CARGC Postdoctoral Fellowship.” This is a one-year position renewable for a second year based on successful performance. CARGC produces and promotes scholarly research on global communication and public life. Their work brings together “area studies” knowledge with theory and methodology in the humanities and social sciences to understand how local, lived experiences of people and communities are profoundly shaped by global media, cultural, and political-economic forces. This synthesis of deep regional expertise and interdisciplinary inquiry stimulates critical conversations about entrenched and emerging communicative structures, practices, flows, and struggles.

CARGC postdoctoral fellows work on their own research while also participating in and leading ongoing research projects within CARGC. During the fellowship, they present their work as part of a postdoctoral colloquium and work closely with the Senior Research Manager on a plan for publishing their research. There are limited opportunities for teaching that are decided in consultation with Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies.

This is an exciting opportunity for a post-doctoral researcher to join a research project, funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State, examining the links between international mobility and world development. Reporting to Prof Maia Chankseliani, the post-holder will join a team of six enthusiastic, interdisciplinary researchers based at the University of Oxford Department of Education. The post-doctoral researcher will be fluent in Arabic and possess familiarity with the Middle East & Northern Africa (in particular, Lebanon, Libya, Qatar, UAE, Morocco, Yemen, Iraq, Jordan, Palestinian Territories, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Israel), and will lead on the data collection, searches, analysis, and presentation of findings on the Middle East & Northern Africa and, if required, on other regions. They will also work on extensive searches of secondary sources, conduct elite interviews online and engage in conducting systematic literature reviews, as well as independently develop a holistic understanding of the designated global region (Middle East & Northern Africa) in order to be able to meaningfully contextualise and interpret numeric and narrative findings pertaining to the selected region.

Under the leadership of Dr. Ernest Caldwell, the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures will be hosting a collaborative research project ‘Han phonology: when Chinese became Chinese’, which will produce a Handbook of Han Chinese Phonology intended to supersede the existing monograph length studies of Han phonology. The Handbook will synthesize the existing knowledge of sound change in this period, formalizing this synthesis with finite state transducers. In addition, by applying state-of-the-art network analysis to the linguistic data found in a robust corpus of texts that includes newly unearthed sources, we will pinpoint the time, place, and social milieu of known changes, adjudicate controversial proposal, and provide a rigorous treatment of dialectal and sociolectal variation.

The Post-Doctoral Researcher will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Dr. Caldwell and Co-Investigator, Dr. Nathan Hill. The role is for the primary researcher on the project, and the post holder will be responsible for collecting and processing data and preparing single and multi-authored research outputs. The appointee will have a high degree of self-motivation and a demonstrable pride in the quality of written work and research previously undertaken.

The Interdisciplinary Center for East Asian Studies at the Faculty of Linguistics, Cultures, and Arts is seeking to fill the position of one Postdoctoral Researcher from 01.01.2023 for the duration of the project until 31.12.2025. You are expected to do your own research on migration decisions of Japanese migrants in Germany within the joint EU-funded project AspirE (Decision Making of Aspiring (Re)Migrants to/within the EU: The Case of Labour Market-Leading Migrations from Asia).

Your tasks include working on a qualitative research project in collaboration with the PI (and supported by a research assistant), including:

  • researching the socio-legal context of Japanese migration to Germany (policy analysis)
  • conducting and analyzing expert interviews, group discussions and semi-structured interviews
  • carrying out social network mapping using an open access platform
  • collecting video diaries among selected study participants
  • working with the project partners in the EU as well as
  • publishing the results

    Requirements are successfully completed university studies (master degree) and a successfully completed doctorate in social sciences or area studies. You also need to show a proven interest in the field of migration studies in the German and/or Japanese context (e.g. through publications) as well as interdisciplinary studies and excellent methodological skills in qualitative research. In addition, background knowledge on, experience or interest in the psychological, emotional or affective dimensions of migration are required. Japanese language skills required.

U Cambridge: Research for Equitable Access and Learning Postdoc (UK)

The Research for Equitable Access and Learning (REAL) Centre within the Faculty of Education wishes to appoint a Research Associate to work on a project that maps research in Sub-Saharan Africa from African-based universities and research institutions, with a focus on foundational literacy and numeracy.

This study is in collaboration with the charity, Education Sub-Saharan Africa (ESSA) with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It will involve the further development of the African Education Research Database, established by the REAL Centre together with ESSA. The postholder will be involved in extending the database to include publications in French, along with more detailed mapping of research on foundational literacy and numeracy. They will also undertake more detailed searches of literature within selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa on this topic. The postholders will provide an analysis of the scope of research in the region/selected countries with a particular focus on foundational literacy and numeracy, and identify gaps for potential future research. They will work under the direction of Professor Pauline Rose in close collaboration with ESSA.

Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant subject area (Education, Economics, Sociology or Development Studies, or other area that uses relevant literature and research methods); have excellent research and computer skills in particular for searching and analysis of literature; an ability to critically review reports and other documents, and to prepare drafts of reports emerging from this analysis to a high standard.
