2 PhD Studentships with Graduate Teaching Assistantships 2024-5 in Languages and Intercultural Studies, School of Social Sciences, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Deadline: 10 July 2024.

The School of Social Sciences seeks to award a number of PhD scholarships with associated Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) positions to outstanding doctoral candidates with clear potential to excel as academic teachers and researchers. The GTA PhD scholarship is a four-year fixed term position: Students undertake a PhD on a 0.75 FTE basis alongside a 0.25 FTE teaching contract. Remuneration consists of a PhD stipend of £14,427 per annum (0.75 of the standard UKRI rate), plus a salary of £7,401. In addition, PhD tuition fees will be covered.

Two posts are available in the Department of Languages & Intercultural Studies. One of the posts will provide teaching support in Spanish, and the other will provide teaching support in British Sign Language (BSL). Under the leadership of the Head of Department, Prof. Jo Drugan, the role-holders will provide teaching support, including large and small group teaching, tutorials and assessment activities.

Heriot-Watt University’s School of Social Sciences is offering a number of full-time PhD studentships to start in September 2024. Studentships include a tuition fee waiver and an annual stipend currently set at £18,622. The duration of the studentships is 3.5 years. The School of Social Sciences also offers a research support allowance of £2,250 over the registered period of study. In addition, full-time scholarship holders are normally offered an opportunity to undertake paid teaching support each academic year.

Projects in areas related to language and intercultural studies include The use of new language technologies for translation purposes by non-language professionals in higher education settings, and also Decolonising research and research methodologies

The School of Education invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Languages and Intercultural Studies (Research & Teaching Track) at the University of Glasgow. You will develop, lead and sustain research and scholarship of international excellence and contribute to knowledge exchange activities relative to the UNESCO Chair in Refugee Integration through Languages and the Arts (UNESCO RILA). You will also contribute to learning and teaching and undertake administration and service activities in line with the School/College’s strategic objectives. The School is situated within the College of Social Sciences (CoSS) and it welcomes applications from candidates keen to contribute to interdisciplinary research, scholarship and knowledge exchange across CoSS and University. Applications are invited from candidates who hold a Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in related discipline with a growing reputation for scholarship within the subject area. This post is full time and fixed term for 3 years.

Anastasia Karakitsou Profile

ProfilesAnastasia Karakitsou was born in Athens, Greece. She has an MA in Professional Language and Intercultural Studies from the University of Leeds, UK (Distinction, 2017), and a BA in English Language and Literature from the University of Athens, Greece (2012). She speaks Greek, English, German and Turkish.

During her 2010 Fall semester she took part in the Erasmus exchange program by attending the İstanbul Kültür Üniversitesi (Turkey), where she had a first-hand experience of the problems of ‘inappropriate’ as well as the potential of ‘appropriate’ intercultural communication. Then, she fell in love with observing and studying issues of language, culture and identity.

Anastasia is interested in linguistics, more specifically in the interdisciplinary domains of sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and anthropological linguistics. She focuses on how language is strategically used to shape our thoughts and actions, e.g. through racist and xenophobic rhetoric in politics and the media, and how intercultural differences are managed, e.g. in translation. What is more, she is fascinated by how the ‘language police’ works, for instance by how certain dialects and accents are functionalized to categorize people into upper and lower social classes. Her goal is to contribute to the formation of an open and diverse society by critically thinking about and resisting the linguistic and cultural status quo.

She has actively taken part in the research project The challenges in dealing with cultural practices that differ from one’s own in the intercultural communication exchange among individuals from diverse cultures managed by the University of Leeds, UK and the University of Guanajuato, Mexico (November 2017-February 2018). She has also worked as a Research Assistant for the research project The Anthropology of Swimming: Exploring Communication, Identity and Inclusivity in British Swimming Pools (University of Leeds, UK, July 2017).

She has worked mainly in the education and translation sector: as a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teacher, a Greek language teacher, an English language exams preparation coach, a student education service assistant, an EN>GR/GR>EN translator and proofreader.
