The Japan-U.S. Communication Association (JUCA) invites individual paper submissions for competitive review for the 110th NCA Annual Convention (November 21–24, 2024, in New Orleans, Louisiana). Papers may address issues in any area of communication, including communication technology, social media, digital, pop culture, mass media, journalism, public relations, advertising, interpersonal, small-group, organizational, international, rhetoric, politics, health, peace, environment, cultural identity, gender, and critical/cultural studies. All methods are welcome. However, they must be related to Japan or Japanese people/culture in some way, such as Japanese indigenous communication, Japan–U.S. communication or relations, and communication between Japanese and people of any nation. Individual papers reflecting the 2024 convention theme, “Communication for Greater Regard,” are particularly desired. The convention theme invites paper and panel submissions that examine the stewardship of communication for greater regard for what has been before us, what is presently around us, and what will be beyond us, as well as other topics that relate to the convention theme.

UN U: Outreach Communications Assistant (Japan)

Located in Tokyo, the Office of Communications assists the Rector in the communication about UNU’s work, engagement with key stakeholders, and visibility of UNU’s activities in Japan and globally. The work of the UNU Office of Communications focuses on communicating the outcomes from UNU research in clear, accessible language, in ensuring these messages reach the right audience and in gradually increase the size of the audience. To achieve this, the UNU Office of Communications employs high quality design, produces engaging content and deploys a wide range of communication assets.

The major responsibilities of the Outreach Communications Assistant will be to:
1. Support the visibility and interest of UNU’s Japan Outreach through digital and social media.
2. Assist and support the organization of online and in-person events related to Japan Outreach.
3. Support the translation of English material into Japanese and assist in editing and proofreading Japanese content.
4. Assist with building UNU communication products in Japanese.

 

US-Japan Leadership Program 2024/25 (Japan/USA)

FellowshipsCall for applications: US-Japan Leadership Program (USJLP), participants expected to be in Seattle, WA July 27 – Saturday, August 3, 2023 AND in the Japan in July 2025. Deadline: 8 January 2023.

USJLP is the flagship program of the United States-Japan Foundation. It launched in 2000 with the purpose of developing a network of communication, friendship and understanding among the next generation of leaders in each country.  With the goal of bridging the gap between East and West, the Program fosters a continuing dialogue among future leaders in a broad variety of professions. It starts this process by bringing some young leaders together from each country for two intensive weeklong conferences over two years, with discussions revolving around historical and current issues in bilateral relations, as well as issues reaching beyond our two countries. Through serious conversation as well as recreation and shared cultural activities it seeks to nurture lifelong friendships. The Program is designed to keep the leaders in touch with each other throughout their careers through a dedicated website and member directory, frequent reunions and newsletters, and online social networks.

All members hold US or Japanese citizenship, enter the Program between the ages of 28-44 and have demonstrated leadership in their respective fields. Membership requires a commitment to participate in two consecutive summer conferences as a Delegate (one in Japan, and one in the USA), and the intent to remain active in the Program as a Fellow (alumnus).

UNU: Communications Associate (Japan)

The Communications Associate will promote UNU-IAS and its activities to raise visibility and impact, with a particular focus on target audiences in Japan. She/he will play a key role in implementing the communications strategy of UNU-IAS, with the overall goal of shaping, packaging, and delivering the institute’s products and expertise to maximize impact, effect positive change, and drive further demand for UNU-IAS work.

Under the general supervision of the UNU-IAS Director, and the direct supervision of the Manager of UNU-IAS Communications, the Communications Associate will perform the following tasks:
1. Manage Japanese-language content across the institute’s digital channels and printed products, ensuring coherence, quality, and consistent branding.
2. Support the implementation and further development of the institute’s communications strategy, targeting audiences in Japan.
3. Generate positive media coverage of UNU-IAS and its activities.
4. Facilitate internal communications and collaboration.

 

United Nations U: Academic Programme Advisor (Japan)

The United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) is one of 14 research and training Institutes that comprise that think tanks in the UNU system and is based at the university’s headquarters in Tokyo, dedicated to advancing global efforts towards a more sustainable future. UNU-IAS serves the international community through policy relevant research and capacity development focused on sustainability, integrating its social, economic, and environmental dimensions. The activities of the institute are in four thematic areas: i) governance for sustainable development, ii) biodiversity & society, iii) water & resource management, and iv) innovation & education. The work of UNU-IAS is directed towards priority issues for the UN system and Member States, contributing to high-level policymaking and debates to address problems of global concern. Under the supervision of the UNU-IAS Director, the Academic Programme Advisor will manage a set of academic programmes and projects and develop relevant activities in the institute’s four thematic areas, serving as Academic Director.   • Lead academic and research activities

Required qualifications and experience include, but are not limited to: a master’s degree or equivalent qualification in communications, journalism, sustainable development, environment, social sciences, international relations, or a related field; equivalent experience in combination with a bachelor’s degree will be considered a minimum of 5 years of working experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public relations or related area is required, preferably in an international setting.

Bridging Cultural Gap Between Morocco, Japan

“The greatest strength I gained through this project is cultural awareness. I’m better equipped with skills to work in [a] multicultural environment.”

This article documents the ways in which Hafsa Rifki, of Morocco, who first became interested in Japanese anime, then began studying the Japanese language, and later Japanese culture, became part of a cultural circle of like-minded peers, which turned into the group Nipponia. Later she moved to Japan for a PhD in Media and Governance at Keio University. While in Japan, she developed a similar group of people interested in Morocco, named Morocconia. She now manages both groups.
