We are currently accepting applications for our fascinating Study Abroad Program in Italy (deadline February 15, 2017).

We are excited to continue the strong tradition of education abroad studies in Sorrento, Italy.

The program will familiarize students with theory and research methods in the areas of global communication, construction and negotiation of identity, cross-cultural awareness, and a hands-on management with a global mindset. Additionally, the program offers an everyday complimentary Italian class taught by native speakers, fascinating on-site work with unique local craftsmen, entrepreneurs, and business owners, exploration of gastronomic wonders of Italy, excursions to Rome, Pompeii ruins, Mt. Vesuvius, Naples, Amalfi, Ravello, Postiano, and a boat trip to the island of Capri.

This program is facilitated by Julia Khrebtan-Hörhager, who is professor of communication and a former lecturer of Italian and German studies. Her research and teaching interests are in intercultural communication, management with a global mindset, European studies, conflict, transnational feminism, and international cinematography.

The conference’s main focus is on ‘Otherness and the construction of identities’ (be they geographical, ethnic, political, religious, cultural, or social), while the underlying theme requested of the papers is ‘the perception and representation of the enemy’. Contact with the Other, as well as the fear of difference, are highly topical subjects of reflection: the distorting visions they express have, for too long, greatly affected peoples’ civil life and their individual and collective imaginary.

Three sessions are planned, in keeping with the conference’s multi-disciplinary approach: the first session encompasses the Histories of Art, Cinema and Photography; the second concerns History; the third Literature. The papers may be related to the Middle, Modern, or Contemporary ages.

The aim of the conference is to investigate the origin, the circulation and the consolidation of cultural discourses that generated stereotypes and ideas concerning otherness – often aberrant and discriminatory ones – and thus we invite submissions of papers related to the analysis of figures who have been subjected to exclusion and depersonalisation, perceived as belonging to ‘Other Worlds’ to be denigrated, colonised, converted, and/or obliterated: Muslims, Jews, Protestants, Catholics, Eastern Christians, Dissenters, Turks, Blacks, savages, foreigners, ‘enemies’, ‘infidels’.

Papers that may shed light on the perception of Europeans in texts and images produced by non-European cultures will also be accepted.

Satire and the various forms of violence perpetrated at the expense of other and different cultures, express – as the obverse sides of the same coin – the anxiety but also the fascination and myths created regarding places and peoples that were/are unfamiliar or ‘remote’.

Particular consideration will be given to contributions focusing on mutual influences and on different forms of contamination and hybridization: appropriations of stylistic features and models of the other within the cultures of origin, as well as the diffusion (or imposition) of values, paradigms of knowledge, practices of representation from the hegemonic cultural centre outwards.

The conference also intends to investigate and deconstruct what is hidden behind the labels of ‘enemy’ or the Other, and encourages the adoption of innovative and cross-cultural research perspectives, privileging, when possible, less explored areas and connections.

European identities, political contrasts and internal religious polemics;

How to apply:
If you wish to submit a proposal, please send name(s), email address and affiliation, as well as title, five keywords, abstract (max. 300 words) outlining a 20-minute paper, together with a brief bio (including main research interests and publications – no more than five references), and (if so desired) a provisional bibliography concerning your paper. Please indicate, immediately before or immediately after the title of the abstract, your session of reference: history of art, history or literature (this also applies to multi-disciplinary papers).

Deadline for proposals: by 6th March 2017.

Selected articles of each session/field of research will be published as a volume of conference proceedings, following a double-blind peer review process. The publication will provide (limited) space for (black-and-white) illustrations.

EIUC Training for International Electoral Observers (Italy)

Training seminar for International Electoral Observers

Admissions to the two, three-day, modules (20-22 March 2017 and 23-25 March 2017) of the Training seminar for International Electoral Observers are open until 12 February 2017, early bird 22 January 2017.
Location: Monastery of San Nicolò, Venice Lido (Italy)

Open and legitimate elections are the indispensable foundation for sustainable development and an effective democracy. Actions supporting the right to participate in genuine elections can play a major role in sustaining peace, security and conflict prevention. Support takes the form of electoral assistance projects and election observation missions. This requires skilled and trained observers.
Target: The two modules are devoted to those applicants with no experience in election observation or to those observers who have participated to a maximum of two missions as short term observers.

Eligibility: Lectures are conceived for an audience of graduates mainly in Law, Political Sciences, Economics, Sociology, Philosophy, Anthropology or similar who want to address international election observation from a multi-disciplinary approach that will be useful in further engagements on the field.

Training language: all courses will be held in English. It is, therefore, essential that all participants understand and speak English fluently.

The notion of identity – be it personal, religious, ethnic or national – is important to interculturalists. It is through learning about our own and about the identities of other individuals and groups that we come to know what makes us similar and different. In a global and multicultural world, individuals and organizations have increasingly multiple identities, asserting different identities in different circumstances and moments in their lives, according to the context and the people they are interacting with. Furthermore, intercultural interactions are ever more frequent, consequently identities are in continuous evolution, and often in conflict.SIETAR ITALIA has chosen the subject of its 9th conference to be “Multicultural Identities: Understanding the Sense of Belonging”. The objective is to foster greater understanding of these developments and its implication for interculturalists in the areas of education, work, institutions and social matters.With this conference, SIETAR ITALIA intends to showcase the latest research and explore the ambivalences, fluctuations and modalities which underpin multicultural identities. The conference wants to facilitate a debate amongst practitioners and will be a forum for networking and professional development.
During the conference, artistic projects and exhibitions will contribute to a further re ection on the theme of “Multicultural Identities”.

All members, friends and sympathizers who have worked on the subject of “Identity” are welcome to propose papers or presentations that shed new light on, but are not limited to the following topics:

Cagli Project: Study Abroad in Italy 2017

Gonzaga University has announced that the Cagli Project is now available to advanced undergraduates as well as graduate students from any university.  This will be the 14th year of the Intercultural Communication and International Media Project in Cagli, Italy. Students can earn up to six graduate or undergraduate credits in communication and leadership in this cultural immersion project that stresses media convergence.  Come and discover the “real” Italy.  Recently one of their projects was featured in the American Journalism Review .

The program includes instruction in language and culture as well as photo, video, web design, writing and blogging.  Class begins in Florence and moves to historical Cagli in the Apennine Mountains.  The program also includes a day trip Assisi, the beautiful Renaissance city of Urbino, and there is free “weekend travel” to beautiful beaches or other Italian cities. Dates are June 17 – July 3, 2017.  The program has won several awards.

CFP International Association for Dialogue Analysis 2017 (Bologna)

The 2017 International Association for Dialogue Analysis (IADA) conference will be held from October 11-14, 2017 at the University of Bologna (Department of Education) and is sponsored by the School of Psychology and Education, the FAM (Fondazione Alma Mater), and the International Association for Dialogue Analysis.

The conference focuses on the role of dialogue or interaction in displaying, maintaining, creating yet also defying the crucial dimensions of the world we live in. This process is particularly at play – although not necessarily noticed – in everyday life. Rather than a context, this phenomenological notion indicates the obvious, routine, quasi-natural quality of most human practices taking place in ordinary as well as institutional contexts. Quoting a well-known formula by John Heritage (1984) yet applying it beyond the micro-level of the hic et nunc discursive environment, we propose to conceive dialogue as “context shaped and context renewing.” Overcoming the “interactional reductionism” (Levinson, 2005) implied in focusing solely on the emergent properties of language use, as well as any simplistic return to sociocultural, psychological an even material determinism, dialogue and interaction are seen as an “intermediate variable” (Ibidem) or faits d’interface (Descola, 2016) connecting the micro-order of everyday life and the macro-order of shared culture and social structure. As Rommetveit put it forty years ago, dialogue is “the skeleton” or “the architecture of intersubjectivity” (1976).

The conference welcomes empirical and methodological papers from different disciplinary perspectives that focus on dialogue and interaction as carriers of, and tools for culture, social organization, moral horizons, identities and change. Theoretical papers are more than welcome insofar as they provide some empirical illustration of the paper’s theoretical point(s). The conference includes but it is not limited to, the following subthemes:

* Dialogue and Health (e.g. dialogue as therapy; dialogue in clinical settings; medical interaction; dialogue in multilingual-multicultural healthcare contexts; dialogue in social work).

* Dialogue, Justice and Social Change  (e.g. dialogue in policing including interrogations, citizen calls; criminal, civil and administrative law; transidioma and  asylum; intercultural institutional talk; social conflicts and Alternative Dispute Resolution practices; family and social mediation; restorative justice).

EIUC Training for International Electoral Observers

EIUC training seminar for International Electoral Observers is now ready to accept candidatures.

EIUC has developed two three-day modules aiming at providing training to civilian staff in election observation missions at the first steps of their career (i.e. short term observers). Selected applicants will be allowed to become aware of the role, the tasks and the status of international observers, and will be given a theoretical and practical training on election observation and election observation missions functioning.

The first module (7 – 9 November 2016) will highlight the quantitative observation of the STOs. Starting with a thorough introduction on the international observation theory and legal standards the first module will analyse the practical life of a short term observer from the selection procedure to the end of mission including the observation of the polls, the filling of the forms, the reporting system and the code of the conduct. The methodology will combine frontal lecturers in plenary, working groups as well as role plays, discussions and simulation exercises.

The second module (10 – 12 November 2016) is principally intended as a complementary step for those participants who have already attended the first module. EIUC will nevertheless also accept candidatures from first time applicants to EIUC’s trainings seminars. The second module will introduce the participants to the long-term election observation by analysing in depth some of the aspects related to an international observation mission such as working relations, interviewing techniques, media and security.

EIUC will accept candidatures for each separate module or both combined. Applicants will therefore have a possibility to choose the module which is more closely related to their interests and experience or combine the two of them for a more complete understanding of the topic.

The faculty is composed by well-known international trainers and professionals with a long standing practical experience in election observation missions within international organisations such as the European Union and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Masters in Democratic Governance (Venice)

The European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC) and its partner univeristies Birzeit University (Palestine), Saint Joseph University (Lebanon), International University of Rabat (Morocco) and Ca’ Foscari University (Italy) are proud to present to you the second edition of the Master in Democratic Governance – Democracy and Human Rights in the Mena Region (DE.MA), starting in September 2016.

DE.MA is a multidisciplinary curriculum offering courses in law, political science, sociology and other fields relevant to the study of democratic governance and Human Rights. Open to professionals and graduates, it will combine a theoretical and practical approach and it will deliver a professional Master’s degree (60 ECTS) from Ca’ Foscari University, Venice. The first semester from mid/late September 2016 until January 2017 is held at the EIUC premises in Venice and the second one from February to May 2017 takes place in one of the partner universities in the Master’s Consortium. Thesis defence and graduation ceremony are in July 2017.

This is meant to play an active role in the ongoing debate about the principles underpinning the transition of political regimes to democracy. It aims at:
•Creating high-profile experts in the fields of democratic governance and the protection of human rights, allowing them to act as promoters of a process leading to the affirmation of the democratic principles;
•Fostering the creation of an élite group of people committed to the promotion of democratic institutions;
•Building a network of experts to be active in political institutions, in national and international, governmental and non-governmental organizations in the Region.
