JOB OPPORTUNITY:
E.MA Programme Director for the academic year 2013/2014

The European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC) is seeking a qualified individual for the position of E.MA [European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation] Programme Director for the academic year 2013/2014.

The position, which is being posted at the level of university professor or senior researcher, involves a combination of teaching, organisation, and various academic and practical responsibilities connected with the E.MA programme.

Working under the instructions of the E.MA and EIUC governing bodies and in cooperation with the EIUC Secretary General, the candidate selected will assume primary responsibility for the academic coordination of the E.MA programme a.y. 2013/2014. He or she will furthermore be involved in the development of new academic and research-based activities in the context of the EIUC.

Functions and tasks
The E.MA Programme Director will work as member of the permanent EIUC staff, based in Venice-Lido. Tasks will include the following:
*To coordinate the advanced planning of the E.MA programme;
*To oversee in the daily management of the E.MA programme – including the first semester field trip, which in recent years has been going to Kosovo – with a view to maintaining the excellent standards and academic coherence of the first semester courses;
*To establish advance contact with academic responsibles, lecturers and experts, and assist the academic responsibles and other lecturers in carrying out the scientific and educational programme;
*To supervise and coordinate E.MA Fellows in the performance of their tasks;
*To organise and teach seminars introducing one of the core disciplines (law, political science, international relations) of the E.MA programme;
*To set up and lead working groups and workshops incorporated in the academic programme;
*To oversee the assessment of student assignments;
*To exercise a proactive role in identifying and rectifying problems of an academic nature;
*To take a proactive role in the development of additional academic activities in the context of the EIUC; this may include initiating and facilitating research collaboration, academic publication, and the organisation of training courses, seminars and conferences.

Qualifications:
Doctorate in a relevant discipline (e.g. law, political science, international relations), teaching experience, good publication record, team-working ability, administrative experience. Excellent knowledge of English; proficiency in French. The selected candidate will be expected to take up the position no later than beginning of September 2013. Salary negotiable, depending on qualifications.

The Venice Academy of Human Rights is an international programme of excellence for human rights education, research and debate. It forms part of the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC).

The Academy offers interdisciplinary thematic programmes open to academics, practitioners and doctoral students with an advanced knowledge of human rights.

A maximum of 60 participants will be selected.

Participants attend morning lectures, afternoon seminars and workshops and can exchange views, ideas and arguments with leading international scholars and experts. This includes the opportunity to present and discuss their own “work in progress” such as drafts of articles, chapters of doctoral theses or books and other projects.

At the end of the programme, participants receive a Certificate of Attendance issued by the Venice Academy of Human Rights.

Global Change in a Dynamic World

The Department of Communication at the University of South Florida is pleased to announce its participation in the fifth year of USF’s Postdoctoral Scholars program in the social sciences and humanities. The over-arching theme for this year’s scholars is “Global Change in a Dynamic World.”

Postdoctoral Scholars are expected to (a) contribute to one or more of the priority goals of USF’s strategic plan, (b) work closely with distinguished faculty, (c) participate in  interdisciplinary and programmatic seminar series, (d) teach two courses over a twelve-month period, and (e) continue to build an independent research record and engage in publishing refereed articles and creative scholarship.

Areas in which post doctoral scholars might work include (but are not limited to) sustainability; sustainable development; hazard and disaster management; climate change; population changes; technology and information issues; communication and language development; cultural diasporas; ethnicity, gender, and aging issues; cultural heritage and histories; citizenship; identity; health, economic, education, and environmental disparities; political economy; ethics; human rights; animal rights; peace and conflict studies; injury and violence; security and surveillance issues. Specific research and geographical areas are open, and applicants may consider both past and contemporary perspectives.

Appointments are for full time employment (40 hours per week), will begin August 5th, 2013, and be continued for a maximum of 2 years contingent upon satisfactory performance. The salary is $40,000 per year and the University contributes to a health insurance program for postdoctoral scholars and their dependents (up to $6,000). Support for travel to academic conferences will be available. Scholars are responsible for their relocation and housing expenses.

Applicants in communication must have earned a doctoral degree in communication no earlier than 2010 and successfully defended their dissertations by May 1, 2013.  The doctoral degree must be conferred prior to the first day of employment.  (Applicants must receive their doctoral degree from an institution other than USF.)

Venice Academy of Human Rights

Venice Academy of Human Rights
11-16 July, 2011

The Academy in 2011 is dedicated to the topic “Human Rights and the Cosmopolitan Idea(L)”. The Academy offers interdisciplinary (Law, Philosophy, Sociology, Political Science, Religious Studies) thematic programmes open to academics, practitioners and Ph.D./J.S.D. students from all over the world. It will include lectures by, inter alia, Professors Abdullahi A. An-Na’im, David Held, Yasuaki Onuma, Boaventura de Sousa Santos and Mary Robinson (Former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights). Last year the Academy was honored by the key lecture of the Nobel Prize Laureate Amartya Sen.
