The aim of this cross-disciplinary conference is to bring together academics, students, researchers and professionals from different disciplines and cultural backgrounds, encourage them present their work, communicate, exchange and collaborate. You can participate to present a paper, chair a session, organise a panel, or even be an observer. The organization of international academic conferences was a dream come true. This dream became reality with the Communication Institute of Greece (COMinG) in 2013. This association was established originally in France in 2003, under another name, but the focus on communication and interaction was always central. CFP Borders & Crises in European Past & Present (Greece)

The Tensions of Europe Early Career Scholars’ Group organises the summer school “Borders and Crises in European Past and Present – angles from the history of technology” in connection with the 8th Tensions of Europe Conference (Athens, 7-10 September 2017).

The summer school aims at introducing PhD’s and early career scholars to the Tensions of Europe network as well as to facilitate and encourage network between young scholars across borders, while building their academic skills. The summer school further relates to the overall conference theme, problematizing how history of technology contributes to the study of border related phenomena. It also aims at revisiting the close connections between borders and technology by focusing at another keyword, which is related to the on-going discussion of Tensions of Europe future research agenda: crises. Following the main objective of the Tensions of Europe Early Career Scholars’ Group, the event focuses on network building through workshops, discussions and informal events.

One of the main themes we will discuss is the concept of crisis and how it has been co-produced with narratives about technology and borders in a historic perspective. How is a crisis formulated and perceived in relation to technology? How have different politics of crises looked over time? What links or separates definitions of crises over time? And what role does the memory of past crises play in the definition of and coming to terms with later crises? We also invite you to relate these issues to the conference theme of borders, and discuss themes such as migration, security and violence, political regimes and identities, human rights, economic infrastructure and more. We hope for a fruitful discussion that can inspire and help all participants in their future research.

Schedule and structure
In order to promote network building, the summer school is organized to a large extend around workshops and group discussion. The expected schedule of the summer school will include one lecture, one session for introductions, one workshop on writing and publication, one session on funding, one session co-organised with the ‘Borders, Technology, Peace’ Pre-Conference Meeting (to be confirmed), one workshop on the topic of crises, and two sessions connecting these activities and discussions to the Tensions network and its research agenda (see link above).

How to apply
In order to participate, we invite applicants to submit a short bio (no more than one page) and a short text (300-500 words)explaining their interest in the topics of the summer school and how their work would benefit from these discussions.

Proposals should be sent until 30th April 2017 to Elena Kochetkova.

In the beginning of the summer, participants will be asked to read texts and write short contributions for the workshops. The deadline for submitting these contributions will also be communicated to the participants at that time.

Location and other practicalities
The summer school will take place in Athens, on the 5th and the 7th September, in the seminar room in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and on the 6th September it is expected to take place in Delphi, as part of the ‘Borders, Technology, Peace’ Pre-Conference Meeting (to be confirmed).

The participants of the summer school are expected to be on-site, but in some of the sessions, we might also be able to include a few on-line participants. Those who apply for that option should include that in their application.

As usual, the Tensions of Europe network will have travel grants to which the conference participants can apply to. To apply for these travel grants, the summer school participants will also have to attend the conference.

Study Abroad: Rhetoric & Performance in Ancient Greece 2017

Rhetoric and Performance in Ancient Greece (Villanova University)

As we all know, the communication discipline has its origins in the study of the spoken word and its power to influence political decisions and shape human communities. In this Summer Study Abroad program, Villanova University faculty accompany approximately 20 students on a journey through many of Greece’s historic, cultural, and natural sites in order to engage in the study of performance and rhetoric. Classes are taught open-air style in ancient sites (and on beaches) and students live in 3 or 4 star hotels while traveling from Athens to several Greek islands, Delphi, and Tolo.

Applications are open for this five-week, 6 – credit summer program that allows Communication majors and minors to gain important insights into the roots of the discipline and make contemporary applications through hands-on experience in Greece. The 2017 program consists of two interdependent courses that will engage students in understanding connections between the ancient and contemporary Greek worlds: one focuses on ancient Greek rhetoric, myth and ritual, with attention to the rhetorical shaping and performance of myth in Greek culture. The other focuses on the place of performance in ancient Greece from the time of Homer through the height of theatre in 5th century BCE Athens, with attention to the powerful relationships among performer, text, audience, and place.

The program will be taught by Dr. Shauna MacDonald & Dr. Heidi Rose (Villanova University), and will run from May 21, 2017 (Departure from the U.S.) to June 27, 2017. The deadline for applications is March 1, but we strongly encourage that students meet the early action deadline of Dec. 15, 2016.

Call for applications for three (3) full-time research positions in Sociolinguistics (Project PRESS, Hellenic Open University)

Description of the position
Project PRESS: Provision of Refugee Education and Support Scheme, an initiative of the Hellenic Open University which aims to address the educational and integration needs of refugees currently residing in Greece, is offering three (3) full-time research positions in the subject: fieldwork on the educational (communication and linguistic) needs of refugees. The positional involves at least 6 months fieldwork in refugee camps in Greece (Lesvos, Thessaloniki or Athens). Contract duration: 9 months.

Required qualifications
Candidates should possess the following qualifications: a) PhD in sociolinguistics or PhD candidates in the same field; and b) fieldwork experience of conducting research on a refugee/ immigrant community.

Study Abroad 2016 with Villanova University: Rhetoric in Greece

RHETORIC SUMMER STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN GREECE
5 weeks: May 15th to June 22nd 2016

The Department of Communication at Villanova University announces its 2016 Summer Study Abroad in Greece program–and invites applications from undergraduate students across the United States. Admission is competitive; early action deadline for application is December 15, 2015. Interested students should contact the 2016 Program Director, Dr. Bryan Crable, as soon as possible.

This amazing five-week, 6-credit summer program is specially designed to give Communication students important insights into the origin of the discipline and its relevance to contemporary public discourse. The program travels throughout Greece–including stops in Athens, Delphi, and Tolo as well as the Greek islands of Mykonos, Delos, Santorini, and Crete–as it focuses on the history of the spoken word–and its relation to epic storytelling, oratory, drama, and the life of the polis. The program, run annually since 2001, welcomes students who are majoring & minoring in Communication and closely related fields, such as English, Classics, Humanities, Honors, etc.

The program consists of two team-taught courses, one focusing on ancient Greek rhetoric and democracy (taught by Dr. Billie Murray, Villanova University), and the other on the rhetorical function of myth (taught by Dr. Bryan Crable, Villanova University). The courses take place on ancient archaeological sites and on hotel grounds (including, often, the beach). The size of the program is also ideal, since two faculty members are accompanied by 20-22 students, from universities across the country. This creates a unique learning environment, one that fosters a close intellectual and personal bond between students and faculty.

Scheduled site visits include the Athenian Acropolis, Agora, and Pnyx, Delphi,’s Temples of Apollo and Athena, Akrotiri on Santorini, Ancient Corinth, the Palace of Knossos on Crete, the sacred island of Delos, Agamemnon’s palace at Mycenae, and Epidaurus.  The program is housed in 3- and 4-star hotels throughout the duration of the trip, and program costs include tuition for 6 upper-level Villanova credit hours in COM, all land fees, all breakfasts, all site admissions, and in-country transportation via bus and ferry.

Aims of this Symposium are:
• To provide the first concentrated forum for presenting and discussing current, cutting edge research on intergroup communication
• To bring international seasoned scholars and graduates together with a view to crafting collaborative international projects on intergroup communication across a range of topics
• To stimulate interest in research and teaching of intergroup communication in Greece and its neighboring countries

The study of intergroup communication now has wide appeal in terms of its relevance to organizations, families, health, media, intercultural, new technology, etc. as we well as different disciplines. Papers on all topics of intergroup communication and will include panels on the: family; social networks; news media; disability; stigma; multilingualism; border communication; group vitalities; intergroup contact; multilingual settings; language and identity; particular intergroup settings (e.g., Ukraine, European socioeconomic crisis), etc. A number of publishing contexts will be available for work presented here, including a special issue(s) of the Journal of Language & Social Psychology on language dynamics.

Keynote speakers include Mike Hogg (Claremont Graduate U) and Anne Maass (U of Padova).

CALL FOR PAPERS
This conference aims to broaden the geo-cultural scope of early film studies by providing a forum for scholarship on early and silent cinema in the Balkans and the Near East. These geopolitical designations are to be taken heuristically, as temporary placeholders for conceptual mappings that remain to be developed and that this conference seeks to encourage.

A key common denominator between these otherwise diverse areas in (film) historical terms is that the arrival of the moving pictures finds them in varying stages of transition away from the Ottoman imperial system. The post-Ottoman transition was characterized by intermediate geopolitical formations that no longer exist, though they remain controversial, and by a high degree of overlap between imperial, national, and colonial jurisdictions.

These are critical issues that contribute to the under-representation of the Balkans and the Near East in early film studies. It is broadly known that the Balkans and the Near East feature prominently in early Western cinema’s orientalist imaginary and have stocked Western film companies’ catalogues with filmed “views.” Scholarship on these issues is still scarce, however, and these areas, as producers and consumers of early cinema, are virtually non-existent in film studies. Understanding the impediments to scholarship and mapping out focus areas for investigation can make for exciting and paradigm-changing scholarship.

With this potential in mind, the conference committee welcomes presentation proposals from university-, museum- and archive-affiliated scholars, as well as from independent researchers. In addition to showcasing developments in research, the conference should be an inviting environment for building collegial ties with a view to future archival, historical, and theoretical work. The broader objective is for this event to become the first step towards a transnational community of scholars working on early and silent cinema in and about the Balkans and the Near East across new media and multiple platforms.

A selection of the conference papers will be published in an edited Special Issue of Filmicon: Journal of Greek Film Studies.
