Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply for San Jose State University‘s Summer Study Abroad Program at Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences in Jyväskylä, Finland. Earn up to 6 units of credit in three weeks with a combination of two on-ground courses and a hybrid course. Courses are especially designed for students in communication studies and business, but all majors are invited to join.

Consider participating in this opportunity to visit the lush, beautiful town of Jyväskylä, Finland, hosted by faculty at San José State University.  In just three weeks, you can not only explore Jyväskylä, but, through optional guided excursions, also visit Helsinki (Finland), Stockholm (Sweden) and St. Petersburg (Russia).  Courses will be taught in English by international faculty and will include students from around the world.  Program costs are approximately $2500 plus travel and meals.

Historically, the program has hosted majors from the departments of Communication, Hospitality and Tourism, and Business, but we welcome anyone interested in international exchange!

The University of Jyväskylä is a nationally and internationally significant research university and an expert on education that focuses on human and natural sciences. The University is Finland’s leading expert in teacher education and adult education, as well as the major exporter of education. The Faculty of Sport Sciences is the only one in the country.

Department of Communication in the Faculty of Humanities is currently seeking to recruit staff to the position of Professorship in Journalism, based on a contract of employment to be filled as of January 1, 2016, in effect until further notice.

The Faculty of Humanities in the University of Jyväskylä studies culture, arts and traditions as well as languages and communication in organizations and societies. One of the Faculty’s special characteristics is comparative, researcher oriented and multi-method research and education. The originality, multidisciplinarity and innovativeness in the field of Humanities are apparent in e.g. the many research projects connected with technology.

The definition of the Faculty’s core areas has taken account of the high quality of both research and education, the scope of the activities as well as the National educational responsibilities. Regarding the five core areas in the University of  Jyväskylä, the Faculty of Humanities is strongly associated with three (Education, Learning and Teaching in the Future; Languages, Culture and Processes of Change in the Society; Human Technology).

The professorship in Journalism is located on the University’s strategic core areas of Language, Culture and Social Change Processes and Human Technology. Within the research conducted at the Department of Communication, the professorship is located on the core areas of Communication, media and journalism in globalizing and multicultural societies and Working Life Communication and Communication Professions in Networked Society.

The duties of the professor include developing interdisciplinary research and education in accordance with the strategic objectives of the discipline, the Department and the University of Jyväskylä. This includes active participation in applying for supplementary research funding, launching and implementing research projects. The professor is expected to participate in teaching and supervision activities both on basic and postgraduate level and also to take part in the Department’s administration. In addition, the professor is expected to engage in high quality national and international publishing activity and to participate actively in international research and education work.

The professor is specifically expected to have expertise in the areas related to the future of journalism, such as media and journalism in a networked and multicultural society, effects of social media on journalism and its relationship with the audience, journalistic innovations, as well as journalism and globalization.

The duties and qualification requirements for the position of the professor are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations. The selected person is required to have a full command of Finnish language. When considered appropriate, the university may grant exemption from the language proficiency requirements. The teaching languages in the professorshipin Journalism are Finnish and English. A good command of English is required and a proficiency to teach in English will be considered beneficial.

The professor’s job-specific salary component is based on the job demands levels 8 – 11 (4617,75 €/month – 6803,52 €/month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46,3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.

About the Conference
Contradictorily the concept of intercultural competence is both polysemic and empty at the same time. Researchers, practitioners but also decision makers use it almost mechanically without always worrying about its meaning(s), the ideologies it represents, the impact(s) it has on those who are embedded in its discussions and the injustice it can (too easily) lead to such as neo-racism. A few ‘usual suspects’ – mostly derived from English-speaking researchers/practitioners who enjoy prestige thanks to the symbolic violence of English as a World Language and/or prestigious supranational support – whose work is systematically (and uncritically) mentioned have often managed volens nolens to keep mainstream global understandings of intercultural competence simplified, fuzzy, idealistic and/or unrealistic. For example the ‘faulty’ keywords of culture, tolerance and respect are still present in discussions of intercultural competence.

This call for papers is interested in new, critical and original discussions and approaches to intercultural competence that go beyond these problematic ‘macdonaldised’ models and ‘reinventing the wheel’ perspectives. The conference is interdisciplinary and covers the ‘broad’ fields of communication and education.

The organisers are looking for contributions which are questioning the most ‘influential’ models of intercultural competence and/or who have attempted (un)successfully to develop new understandings and models of intercultural competence. The organisers wish to promote the idea that failure is also inherent to intercultural competence. The question of assessment can be touched upon but the idea that intercultural competence can be summatively assessed should be abandoned. The organisers consider intercultural competence to be synonymous with multicultural competence, cross-cultural competence, global competence, etc. as these labels are also unstable and have many different meanings.

The organisers are especially interested in fresh perspectives from all parts of the world. Historical/diachronic papers ‘denouncing’ reinventing the wheel approaches as well as alternative methods and approaches are very welcome (e.g. use of bodily experiences).

The following themes (among others) can be dealt with:
–  What’s wrong with current approaches? What mistakes have been made in the past and today – especially from researchers’ perspectives?
–  What are the myths around the concept of intercultural competence?
–  Is the idea of intercultural competence a thing of the past? How does it compare to intracultural competence (if such a thing exists)?
–  Can the idea of intercultural competence be really useful for conflictual situations? How can we explain conflicts – which are necessary – beyond the usual suspect of cultural difference?
–   What can we do with old and tired concepts such as identity, culture and community when we talk about intercultural competence?
– How is Intercultural competence understood/taken into consideration in the context of Arabic/English/French/Mandarin… as a lingua franca?
– How do students and e.g. mobile students understand intercultural competence? What seems to influence them?
– How is the ‘teaching’ of intercultural competence implemented in second/foreign language classrooms? Does it echo the teaching of intercultural competence in communication/ management and vice versa?
–  (How) can we move from an individualistic approach to intercultural competence to interactive and co-constructivist ones?
– With increasing use of digital technologies, how does intercultural competence fare?
–  Can neurosciences contribute to renewing the idea of intercultural competence? What about art, music, etc.?

CFP Culture(s) in Sustainable Futures (Finland 2015)

Culture(s) in Sustainable Futures: Theories, Practices, Policies

Is culture the fourth pillar of sustainability alongside the ecological, economic and social aspects? How does culture act as a catalyst for ecological sustainability, human well-being and economic viability?  What would our futures look like if sustainability was embedded in the multiple dimensions of culture?

This landmark conference that takes place in Helsinki, 6-8 May 2015 explores the roles and meanings of culture in sustainable development. The new ideas generated in the conference will inform and advance understandings of sustainability with cultural studies and practices, and vice versa.

The conference explores theories and concepts; policies and governance; and practices and methodologies that explicitly analyse multiple dimensions of culture in sustainable development. Examples that illustrate and reveal the roles of culture in sustainable futures may be found in livelihoods, everyday life practices from housing to consumption, food systems, tourism, landscapes, heritage, media, education, planning, architecture, design and more. These experiences will be brought together by scientists, practitioners and policy-makers in plenaries and smaller sessions based on scientific, artistic, dialogical and hybrid presentational formats.

Call for proposals is now open. The deadline for research paper session proposals is 1st October 2014 and for papers and other forms of presentation 5 th December 2014.

Selected full papers and other contributions will be published in conference proceedings and in a book within the recently-launched book series Routledge Studies in Culture and Sustainable Development. The conference is organised by COST Action Investigating Cultural Sustainability  and hosted by the University of Jyväskylä, Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy.

In the Complexity of (inter)action symposium, we wish to explore complexity from diverse perspectives and focus on examining how social participants manage, coordinate and adapt to complexity, and display complexity socially to others, through skilled multimodal participation. We are also interested in studies that expand the notion of interactional complexity to include the participants’ histories and interactions across multiple timescales.

CFP Pragmatism & Communication conference

From the sign-theoretical approach of C. S. Peirce to the pragmatic analyses of Robert Brandom, matters of communication have figured prominently in pragmatist thought. Beginning with John Dewey and Robert E. Park, pragmatism has also directly influenced communication scholarship; and interest in pragmatist ideas is currently on the rise in media and communication studies. But what roles does ‘communication’ actually play in pragmatisms of various stripes? What are the
distinctive contributions of pragmatism to our understanding and study of communication?

This two-day interdisciplinary conference aims to explore these and closely connected questions. The organisers welcome proposals for papers discussing any aspect of the relationship between pragmatism and communication, ranging from philosophical discussions of the nature and scope of communication to applications of pragmatist ideas in communication studies. Suitable topics include (but are not restricted to):

– Different pragmatist perspectives on communication
– The historical/contemporary contribution of pragmatist thought to the development of communication theory

Nordisco 2014, the Nordic Interdisciplinary Conference on Discourse and Interaction

The Nordic Interdisciplinary Conference on Discourse and Interaction (NorDIsCo) was established in 2010 to bring together researchers and doctoral students in the Nordic and Baltic region who investigate discourse and interaction from different disciplinary perspectives.

After two successful meetings in Aalborg (2010) and Linköping (2012), it is now our pleasure to host the third Nordic and Baltic conference at the University of Jyväskylä (Finland). The conference will be organized by the Department of Languages and the Centre for Applied Language Studies in collaboration with the Finnish Association for Applied Linguistics (AFinLA) November 12-14, 2014.

The conference will highlight research on the organization, structures and constitution of texts, talk, discourse and social interaction and provide a forum for discussion and debate across disciplinary boundaries. The theme of this third conference is Discourse, communities and identities in the North.

Hosted at the University of Jyväskylä (Finland), Nordisco 2014 welcomes contributions on any aspects of discourse and social interaction, particularly with respect to discourse, communities and identities in the North.

We encourage participants to explore, from the vantage point of their own research, one or more of the following questions:
*How can discourse studies help us understand developments in today’s communities in the North?
*What kinds of theories, methods, tools and technologies are needed to better understand changing identities and the challenges of communities?
*How can discourse studies help understand, inform, advice and intervene in the lives of communities to promote improved communicative practices?

We invite contributions from different and diverse fields of enquiry, including – but not limited to – discourse studies, conversation analysis, discursive psychology, critical discourse analysis, interaction analysis, rhetoric, narrative analysis, social semiotics, multimodal discourse analysis, gesture studies and communication activism.

Venue and date
The conference will be hosted by the Department of Languages and the Centre for Applied Language Studies at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, on November 12-14, 2014.

Programme
The conference will consist of two plenary presentations, panel sessions, parallel paper sessions and a plenary round table discussion with contributions from leading researchers representing different domains of discourse studies.

Elizabeth Lanza (Oslo) and Anna Lindström (Uppsala) are plenary speakers, and Paul McIlvenny (Aalborg), will chair a round table on the future of discourse and interaction studies in the Nordic region. More information about the round table will be given in the second Call for Proposals.

Submissions
We invite submissions for panel sessions and paper presentations. Panel sessions consist of several thematically related papers to be scheduled in 90 or 180 minute slots. Paper presentations are organized in parallel sessions with 30 minute slots that include discussion time. We will consider abstract proposals for concluded research projects as well as work-in-progress. The online submission system will open in January 2014. The deadline for proposals for panel sessions is on February 28 and for individual paper presentations April 30, 2014.

HOW DO I KNOW IF IT’S WORKPLACE BULLYING? CULTURE MATTERS
Project Description

 

The National Communication Association micro grant provided through the Center for Intercultural Dialogue allowed me to begin a very productive conversation and collaboration with renowned European workplace bullying researcher, Dr. Denise Salin (Hanken School of Economics, Finland). I first connect Dr. Salin after reading her extensive research on workplace bullying and the organization from the European perspective.  Dr. Salin and I, along with our project partner, Dr. Suzy Fox (Professor, Loyola University, Chicago) are in the planning stage of a large multi-national research study on conceptions of workplace bullying.  Our conversations allowed me to better understand workplace bullying from a European perspective and helped shed light on pertinent issues when investigating bullying from a culture perspective.  In order to begin this effort, I needed to raise research funds to allow attendance at the planning meeting in Helsinki, Finland.

Raising Funds for the Trip
To fund this international collaboration trip, I estimated I would need $2,400 for airfare and hotel arrangements.  I was granted $900 from the National Communication Association through the Center for Intercultural Dialogue and $1200 in a Faculty Research Grant from the University of Texas at San Antonio.  This covered the majority of costs associated with the trip and I personally supplemented the remaining sum.  Our meeting was highly successful and because of the trip we are advancing through Phase 1 of the project.

The Project
During our meeting we discussed and finalized a three-phase international workplace bullying project.  From a U.S. human resources perspective, workplace bullying (WB) is defined as “Actions and practices that a ‘reasonable person’ would find abusive, occur repeatedly or persistently, harm or are intended to harm the target, and result in economic, psychological, or physical harm to the target and/or create a hostile work environment” (Fox, Cowan & Lykkebak, 2012, p. 10). While WB is a universal phenomenon, there are institutional, legal, organizational, and cultural factors that necessitate different approaches to bullying in different parts of the world.  We determined our guiding research question: based on the assumption that the violation of national, gendered, or other cultural norms will be perceived as rude, crude, or bullying behavior, to what extent will national differences in cultural values and communication norms be associated with differences in behaviors perceived to constitute workplace bullying?

The Center for Intercultural Dialogue grant allowed me to meet with Drs. Salin and Fox to discuss and refine our three-phase intercultural bullying research project.  We held this meeting during the week of June 1-8, 2013.  During this week-long meeting we were able to discuss important logistics of our international project including securing grants, our project schedule, securing country partners, and specifics of data collection.  The meeting was very productive and we are now able to move forward with data collection for Phase 1 in Summer 2013. We hope to complete the full project by Fall 2015.  We have secured collaboration from country partners in Argentina, Poland, Bahrain, Turkey, India, Australia, Austria, China, Greece, Mexico, the Caribbean, Puerto Rico and we have collaborators who have expressed interest in the United Kingdom and Israel.  What follows are more details on the project:

Phase 1. In this phase we have determined the participating countries and collaborators, gained commitment and alignment of the team members, developed the collaboration protocols and project guidelines, and began creating the interview and survey measures. The two main clusters of materials will be common measures of cultural characteristics and communication norms, an initial set of bullying items based on popular Workplace Bullying measures and semi-structured interview protocols. Focus groups in the U.S. and Finland will be conducted.  We have largely completed Phase one and plan to conduct most focus groups by the end of Summer 2013.

Phase 2. Focus group, interview and survey materials will be translated and back-translated, supplemented by culture-specific questions contributed by our country researchers. Each collaborator will conduct interviews with a minimum of 15 respondents, and will include Human Resource professionals, managers who have handled bullying incidents, and union leaders or other employee representatives.

The focus groups and interviews will seek to uncover underlying cultural assumptions, values, norms, and perceptions that contribute to judgments of workplace bullying behaviors. For each culture, we will work with the collaborators to develop a comprehensive and specific set of behaviors that employees in that culture would consider to be workplace bullying. This will be the starting point for the next phase, the survey.

The project will produce strong intellectual significance by attending to the question: To what extent are national differences in cultural values, communication norms and gender roles associated with differences in a) behaviors perceived to constitute workplace bullying, b) how individuals and organizations respond to perceived workplace bullying, and c) preferences for organizational and public policies, including specific roles assigned to HR professionals in efforts to counter workplace bullying?

This research will result in several direct outputs that will be beneficial for both U.S.-based and global HR departments: 1) specific guidelines for what should be effective practice in addressing WB from a training standpoint, 2) specific guidelines for anti-bullying policy for global and U.S.-based organizations, 3) guidelines for identifying and addressing WB in both local and multicultural contexts, 4) dispute resolution guidelines and procedures and 5) suggestions for incorporating anti-bullying considerations into organizations’ formal performance management and disciplinary systems.  The project’s potential broader impacts are to offer guidance to Human Resource Professionals (HRPs) and managers in defining, recognizing and responding to workplace bullying complaints and situations, and to help multinational corporations develop guidelines that enable people from diverse national backgrounds to work together.
