CFP IALIC 2018 (Finland)

ConferencesInternational Association for Languages and Intercultural Communication (IALIC): The “Good” Interculturalist, University of Helsinki, Finland, 29-31 August, 2018. Deadline: March 15, 2018.

The ‘good’ interculturalist yesterday, today and tomorrow: Everyday life-theory-research-policy-practice

The word ‘intercultural’ has been in use in research and practice in different parts of the world for many decades. In daily life, it is less used compared to ‘competitors’ such as multicultural or, increasingly, diversity. Interdisciplinary at heart, like all concepts, the word ‘intercultural’ is also very polysemic and politically driven.

Our interest in the notion of the ‘intercultural’ in this conference rests on the root of the word, ‘inter’, which hints at reciprocity, being located/occurring/existing between.

This conference serves as a platform to discuss what it means to be a ‘good’ interculturalist today. We expect many and varied (discordant) voices to meet during the conference. The past and future can also be considered, in diachronic and/or synchronic perspectives. The following broad contexts, which often overlap, will be examined: everyday life, theory, research, policy and practice. The micro-contexts of (language) education, teacher education, internationalization of education, business, health care, intercultural couplehood, are of interest amongst others.

CFP Expressions of Race & Racism Online (Finland)

ConferencesCFP: Expressions of race and racism online. This working group is part of the 14th Society for the Study of Ethnic Relations and International Migration (ETMU) Conference on Race, Power and Mobilities (October 26-27, 2017), University of Jyväskylä, Finland.

The long-lasting idea that dematerialized online presence would downplay racial issues is vanishing as studies are increasingly showing the extent to which race is embedded in online structures, vocabulary, and users’ practices (Daniels, 2012). Though much research has been conducted on representations of race in traditional media, few studies have investigated expressions of race and racism in online and social media, and their findings underline the complexity of the topic (Sommier, van Sterkenburg, & Hofhuis, in press).

This working group therefore calls for papers tackling online expressions of race and racism to further understand associated strategies, tensions, and outcomes. Current findings point to a wide range of dialectics that should be further explored. Studies urge for holistic approaches (e.g. Titley, 2014) to attend to the interplay between colorblind and blatant racism, individual and structural aspects, local and global discourses, and traditional and social media. These broad research areas include, but are not limited to:

– users’ online practices, identity formation and social interactions (e.g. Hughey, 2008)
– the creation of racial digital divides (e.g. boyd, 2013)
– strategies used to disguise online racist discourses (e.g. Sharma & Brooker, 2016)
– methodological challenges associated with the study of expressions of race and racism in online settings

*** Important dates and practicalities ***

U Tampere Job Ads: Social Research (Finland)

Five associate professor or professor posts in the New Social Research programme

The University of Tampere is an internationally renowned research-led university and one of the few in the world to specialise in the social sciences.  It has a lively, multidisciplinary and international research environment with a staff of 2,200 and 15,000 students.

The University places strong emphasis on rigorous scholarship in areas of significant social relevance. To help achieve this objective, the University has commenced the New Social Research programme. NSR has five core themes: governing complexity; transformation of agency and empowerment; the changing nature of work; the future of well-being, and; new forms of communication, information and interaction. NSR will become a truly international programme, working across disciplinary boundaries and in partnership with a wide range of external stakeholders nationally and internationally. More information on NSR is available at the programme website.

At the centre of the programme are eleven fully-funded associate or full professor posts. The director, Professor Rebecca Boden, and the first six appointments are already in place. The University of Tampere is now seeking to complete the team by appointing a further five associate or full professors. Appointees will have dual affiliation between NSR and an appropriate faculty, ensuring a clear career trajectory, and at the end of this period it is anticipated that they will take up permanent posts in one of the University’s faculties, as appropriate.

The University of Tampere is seeking highly motivated and accomplished academics who will be active and innovative co-builders of the NSR programme as research leaders. In addition to developing a strong individual research profile within the broad remit of NSR’s activities, you would work collaboratively with fellow NSR researchers to achieve significant programme synergies. Activities would include: effective research leadership (particularly of early career academics); facilitating the development of the NSR profile nationally and internationally; and seeking, winning and managing major research funding. A key role of the NSR programme is to make a major contribution to the further development of the University’s research profile more generally. As such, you would be expected to work collaboratively and constructively with appropriate faculties to embed programme gains across the institution.  Whilst the main emphasis of these roles for the first five years is on research, you would be expected to make a gradually increasing and expertise-appropriate contribution to research-led teaching, curriculum development and research student supervision in the faculties.

What you can offer
You must have: a doctoral degree in a field relevant to the research programme; high-level scientific expertise; an excellent international publication record; and teaching/supervision skills and experience across the range of levels.

Additionally, successful candidates will have a proven track record of international scientific cooperation, and the ability to offer advanced research-led teaching and supervision. Your research interests will be aligned to one or more themes in the NSR programme, but you will be able to demonstrate how you would develop those further. NSR especially welcomes applications under the theme the changing nature of work and is less likely to make any appointments of candidates whose principal contribution would be in the theme governing complexity.

Your proposed work for the duration of the programme will evidence a good fit with NSR objectives and how you would work in an inter- and multidisciplinary environment. Ideally you will have experience of leading or making a major contribution to a research group and a track record of successful applications for external research funding.

What we offer
The University of Tampere offers a dynamic and international research community with strong national and international collaborative networks. Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK), Tampere University of Technology (TUT) and the University of Tampere have recently agreed to merge and will be working collaboratively together to build a unique model of higher education offering an innovative, multidisciplinary and internationally attractive research and learning environment built on demonstrably excellent foundations.  Appointment to NSR offers an opportunity to develop, lead and maintain a dynamic research programme leading to national and international recognition within this environment.

Finnish people almost universally speak English to a high level. Finland is a well-ordered and culturally sophisticated EU country which enjoys world-leading free schooling (including in English), affordable child care, excellent public services, moderate taxation and low levels of bureaucracy.  The Tampere region is one of the fastest-growing urban areas in Finland. Tampere is the largest inland city in the Nordic countries and Finland’s second largest city. The city offers an extremely pleasant environment in which to live and work. Whilst a traditional industrial centre, with an attractive heritage built environment, today the city is best known for its high-tech expertise. The city has a lively cultural life, with many theatres, galleries and museums etc. and is the most popular city to study in amongst Finnish students.

We appreciate that relocation can be daunting and the University’s HR Services provide intensive support for international recruits, especially on matters such as residence permits, registration, taxation, retirement pensions, social security issues, finding accommodation, daycare for children, schooling, health care and other local services in Tampere. You can contact the International HR Team during your application process with any specific queries or see our Join us!-pages on our website. The University of Tampere received the European Commission’s acknowledgement of HR Excellence in Research in March 2015.

The University of Tampere offers a comprehensive package of employee benefits. These include occupational health care, flexible working hours and high-quality sporting facilities. These posts include membership of the generous Finnish statutory earnings-related retirement pension scheme, further details of which are available here.

Finnish universities operate a national University Salary System and salaries will be determined by reference to that. At commencement, the minimum monthly salary of an associate professor will range between €5,000 and €5,600 a month and that of a professor between €5,700 and €6,400 a month. Higher salaries may be agreed dependent upon experience and/or performance.

These posts are subject to a four month probationary period. Initial appointment as associate professor is for five years and, subject to successful performance, post holders will become tenured members of faculty staff at the end of the five year period. The evaluation of suitability for a tenured position will commence after four years in post and appointees will be supported throughout the five year period to ease transition to faculty positions.  Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset.

Åbo Akademi University Job Ad: Minority Studies

Assistant/Associate Professor in Minority Studies (tenure track)

Åbo Akademi University, Finland, invites applications for a position as Assistant/Associate professor in Minority Studies, more specifically cultural and linguistic diversity studies with focus on multicultural and multilingual education through Tenure Track beginning August 1 st 2017 The position is placed at the Faculty of Education and Welfare Studies.

Åbo Akademi University is an internationally acknowledged research university with an extensive responsibility for providing education in Swedish in Finland. The activities cover research and education in most disciplines from humanities, pedagogics and theology to social sciences, natural sciences and technology.

The Minority Studies profile
The assistant/associate professor will together with earlier appointed assistant and associate professors within the profile form the backbone of Åbo Akademi University’s Minority Studies research profile, the recent expansion of which is based on a major grant from the Academy of Finland. The grant foresees the establishment of assistant/associate tenure track professorships which, after successful attainment of individually set goals, will lead to full professorships. At the same time, Åbo Akademi University is recruiting visiting professors who will support and further strengthen the profile.

The Minority Studies profile aims at shaping and developing current strengths within the fields of education, social sciences and humanities at Åbo Akademi University into a leading centre for minority studies and research. Linguistic, cultural, and religious differences together with issues related to in-group and out-group positions pose major challenges to societal cohesion and peace in both European and non-European societies. For instance, current global development is marked by an increasing polarisation of values associated with explicit xenophobic racist attitudes and other radicalising tendencies. This calls for consequent, long-term educational action in order to prevent violence, prejudices and negative attitudes and marginalization related to (minority) languages, cultures and religions/worldviews. There is also a strong need to identify resources for empowerment and promotion of educational and linguistic human rights. Furthermore, it is time to investigate the societal strengths and educational advantages of genuine multilingualism, as well as the potential of multilingual education in relation to the general democratic goal of (comprehensive) education.

With reference to the above Åbo Akademi University’s Minority Studies profile will focus on interdisciplinary minority research with the capacity to recognize and comprehend the complexities involved in the construction and development of minority positions and identities and related issues. This profile is directly connected to the strategic mission of Åbo Akademi University as a university for the Swedish speaking language and cultural minority in Finland. Current research on minorities includes, minorities as part of past nation building and present political mobilization, minority rights and legislation, sexual and gender minorities as well as intersections of ethnic and gender categorizations.

The research area for the assistant/associate professor in Minority Studies is cultural and linguistic diversity studies with focus on multicultural and multilingual education. This research area includes norms and identities related to minority and majority language relations, as well as teaching and learning in educational settings characterised by bi- and multilingualism, for example immersion and non-standard language varieties.

Administratively, the appointee will be members of Faculty of Education and Welfare Studies. In combination with other measures, the appointee is expected to position Åbo Akademi University as an internationally leading institution in interdisciplinary cutting-edge research in the area of Minority Studies. The appointed person will receive a starting grant of 40 000 euro to be used for the employment of a doctoral student or to otherwise support their research.

International applicants are especially encouraged to apply. Åbo Akademi University will provide support for non-Finnish candidates in being able to teach in Swedish within some years after commencing their appointments. A relocation package can be offered to the recruited persons, the terms will be negotiated separately with the recruited persons.

Instructions for the written application can be found in the appointment plan. Applications in English or Swedish should be sent electronically, with enclosures (in English), to the following address: registrator@abo.fi. Theme: Gesture is not an add-on to language. Rather, language and gesture are integrated and synchronised elements of everyday interaction; they represent two sides of the same communicative process. This seminar is prompted by the recent emergence of interdisciplinary research focusing on the connection between language and gesture. It focuses on the connection between language and gesture in social interaction, and in particular on how linguistic forms and gestures are integrated in speech production, and how utterance and interaction meanings are derived from speech-gesture combinations. This international seminar is open to all scholars, researchers and Ph.D. students interested in language, interaction and gesture. We encourage scholars working with less-researched languages to participate in and bring their video data to the seminar. There is no participation fee. Langnet covers the travel and accommodation expenses to those doctoral students who are currently members of the Langnet doctoral programme. Other participants are responsible for covering their own travel and accommodation costs.

Workshop activities:
• Plenaries by the invited guests.
• Data sessions in which participants have the opportunity to present their video data to be discussed and analysed together. The aim of data sessions is to help presenters progress their research or to identify and discuss potential new findings. Therefore, it is not necessary to present final results or special research foci in data sessions.
• Collaborative article workshops in which the participants discuss and work together on the basis of four pre-assigned articles on the seminar theme. Participants are expected to actively take part in the workshop activities. Doctoral students receive 4 study points by participating in the workshop, presenting their data in a data session and reading the pre-assigned articles.
