Anna Lindh Foundation Mobility Programme (2023)

ALFinMOTION: Anna Lindh Foundation Mobility Programme, Alexandria, Egypt. Deadline: 1 April 2023.

In a post-Covid-19 recovery context, the Anna Lindh Foundation (ALF) is ensuring thriving Civil Society National Networks through ALFinMOTION, its interdisciplinary cross-sectoral mobility programme across the region. Capitalising on the diversity of the ALF members on both shores of the Mediterranean, it supports collaborative initiatives aiming at strengthening equal partnerships. An application must be submitted by a host organisation and may involve, depending on the mobility modality, up to two representatives from two hosted organisations from the complementary shores of the Mediterranean. The ALF network webpage can help to make connections between ALF members. The host organisation must be a legal entity and comply with the ALF communication and visibility guidelines when implementing the intercultural dialogue initiative.

ALFinMOTION intends to be a stimulus to incite intercultural dialogue actions between both shores of the Mediterranean through physical mobilities, involving diverse types of expertise and profiles. Host organisations are provided with lump sum allocations and mobilities must always imply the full proactive participation of the hosted organisations. A gender, age and geographic balance share between both shores of the Mediterranean must be observed.

The proposed mobilities under this call can take place anytime between July and December 2023, respecting visa application schedules and requirements.

CIEE Scholarships & Grants for Study Abroad 2023

The nonprofit study abroad and intercultural exchange organization CIEE has been bringing the world together, advancing peace by building bridges of mutual understanding between different people, different countries, and different cultures for 75 years. They offer a variety of scholarships and grants; some are based on need, others on academic achievement, and a few are intended for alumni of a prior CIEE program. They also offer a variety of global internships.

A related program, BridgeUSA, annually attracts around 300,000 individuals to the United States from 200 countries and territories to study in U.S. high schools, universities, and research institutions; build professional networks; enhance English language and intercultural skills; and teach in U.S. schools, colleges, and universities.

Grant Foundation: Research Grants on Reducing Inequality 2023

The William T. Grant Foundation has issued a call for proposals for 2023, including research grants on reducing inequality. This program supports research to build, test, or increase understanding of programs, policies, or practices to reduce inequality in the academic, social, behavioral, or economic outcomes of young people ages 5-25 in the United States. They prioritize studies that aim to reduce inequalities that exist along dimensions of race, ethnicity, economic standing, language minority status, or immigrant origins. They welcome descriptive studies that clarify mechanisms for reducing inequality or elucidate how or why a specific program, policy, or practice operates to reduce inequality. We also welcome intervention studies that examine attempts to reduce inequality. Finally, we welcome studies that improve the measurement of inequality in ways that can enhance the work of researchers, practitioners, or policymakers. They invite studies from a range of disciplines, fields, and methods, and we encourage investigations into various youth-serving systems, including justice, housing, child welfare, mental health, and education.

UNAOC: Intercultural Innovation Hub 2023

Apply now to become the Next Global Changemakers. The new Intercultural Innovation Hub of UNAOC and the BMW Group connects people and cultures, empowers grassroots organizations and elevates intercultural innovation. Selected projects promoting diversity, integration and social inclusion will work towards achieving sustainable growth. Participants will benefit from a financial grant of up to 20,000 USD plus a year of capacity-building workshops, customized support, and membership to the “Intercultural Leaders” global networking platform.

Since 2011, UNAOC and the BMW Group have worked with leaders and organizations from around the globe to tackle intercultural challenges through social innovations. With the new Intercultural Innovation Hub, our mission is to connect people and cultures, empower grassroots organizations, as well as elevate and scale up intercultural innovation. To this end, organizations promoting diversity, integration and social inclusion are invited to become part of the hub and benefit from comprehensive support to expand the social impact of their projects.

The Intercultural Innovation Hub is focused on supporting projects that promote gender equality, counter violent extremism, hatred, and prejudice, and advocate for art, culture and sports as vectors for social cohesion and diversity, through:

  • Financial support for sustainable growth: To leverage the social impact of the selected projects, up to ten finalists will receive up to 20,000 USD each to help their initiative scale up sustainably.

  • One-year capacity-building program: UNAOC and BMW Group with the support of Accenture, will provide the recipients a year-long series of capacity-building workshops and customized support.

  • Membership to the “Intercultural Leaders” community: Participants will be part of a global network of changemakers working in the fields of social inclusion and diversity.

AEJMC Emerging Scholars Grants: 2023

AEJMC Emerging Scholars Program 2023 Research or Teaching Grants. Deadline: 3 October 2022.

The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Emerging Scholars Program will award $3,500 research and teaching grants to up to four research or teaching proposals to encourage innovative and timely projects in journalism and mass communication.AEJMC members may submit proposals for these grants in the fall of 2022, and selections will be announced by early January 2023.

The AEJMC Emerging Scholars Program is designed to develop and nurture JMC teachers and researchers by fostering an intellectually stimulating environment. This program’s mission is to identify, encourage and recognize some of AEJMC’s most promising emerging scholars by providing funding for research or teaching projects. If requested, proposals selected for funding will be matched with a recognized scholar to serve as a mentor throughout the project. The mentor would serve as a resource and sounding board for the project. Proposals should outline an individual’s own significant research or teaching project. Proposals may also be submitted by a research team, which would share the award amount if selected.

Spencer Foundation Grants for 2023 (USA)

Research-Practice Partnerships: Collaborative Research for Educational Change Grants, Spencer Foundation, Chicago, IL, USA. Deadline:  Intent to Apply, 9 November 2022; full proposal due 7 December 2022.

The Research-Practice Partnership (RPP) Grants Program is intended to support education research projects that engage in collaborative and participatory partnerships with project budgets up to $400,000 and durations of up to three years. They accept Intent to Apply forms once a year in this program. Spencer Foundation views partnerships as an important approach to knowledge generation and the improvement of education, broadly construed. Over the long term, they anticipate that research conducted by RPPs will result in new insights into the processes, practices, and policies that improve education for learners, educators, families, communities, and institutions where learning and teaching happen (e.g., schools, universities, museums, other workplaces).

NOTE: This category of grants applications is being highlighted because in the past, they have funded grants relating to intercultural competence, diversity, and dialogue. But there are other categories as well, including Fellowships for Scholars and Journalists, and Conference Grants.

Musser Fund Grants for Intercultural Harmony 2022 (USA)

Through the Intercultural Harmony Initiative, the Laura Jane Musser Fund supports projects that promote mutual understanding and cooperation between groups of community members of different cultural backgrounds. Project planning grants up to $5,000 or implementation grants up to $25,000 will be considered. New programs or projects in their first three years are eligible. Applications will be accepted online through the Fund’s website from September 15 – October 17, 2022.

Priority is placed on projects that include members of various cultural communities working together on projects with common goals; build positive relationships across cultural lines; engender intercultural harmony, tolerance, understanding, and respect; and enhance intercultural communication, rather than cultural isolation, while at the same time honoring the unique qualities of each culture.

NOTE: The geographic areas for this initiative are only Colorado, Hawaii, Minnesota, Wyoming, and limited counties in New York and Texas. 

Royal Geographical Society: Journey of a Lifetime Award

Journey of a Lifetime Award, Royal Geographical Society, UK. Deadline: will be early autumn 2022.

For those with a passion for radio and storytelling, and a genuine curiosity about the world around them, the Journey of a Lifetime Award offers £5,000 to make an original and inspiring journey anywhere in the world. The recipient of the award will receive training in radio broadcasting from the BBC, support from a BBC documentary producer, and will record their journey for a BBC Radio 4 programme.

Established in 2001, the Journey of a Lifetime Award is a collaboration between the Society and the BBC, and is generously supported through a private donation. The award aims to support informed travel and learning, through experience rather than scientific research, and to discover new radio talent. The outcome of each of journey is a BBC Radio 4 travel documentary.

American-Scandinavian Foundation: Grants & Fellowships

The American-Scandinavian Foundation offers a range of grants and fellowships intended to encourage exchanges between the United States and Nordic countries. Deadline: Each program has its own deadline.

These include fellowships for Americans for study or research in Scandinavia, fellowships for Scandinavians for study or research in the US, translation prizes for outstanding translations of poetry, fiction, drama, or literary prose written by a 20th or 21st-century Nordic author, and grants for a wide variety of programs that bring American and Scandinavian culture, art and thought to public audiences, among others.

The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) promotes firsthand exchange of intellectual and creative influence between the United States and the Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden (some opportunities also include Greenland, Faroe Islands, and Sámpi). A publicly supported American nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization based in New York City, ASF has an extensive program of fellowships, grants, intern/trainee sponsorship, publishing, and cultural activities.

Intercultural Cities: Inter-City Grants 2022

“For the third time the Intercultural Cities programme has launched the inter-city grants’ scheme for member cities of the international and national networks. The grants aim to support local innovative projects and methodologies promoting equality, the diversity advantage, and meaningful intercultural interactions in diverse societies. As in the past years, projects involving joint actions of cities have been prioritised with the view to enable peer learning, cross-border or national cooperation across local authorities. The projects aim to test solutions and strategies which can be applied widely across the ICC network in common areas of concern.”

The projects should be of interest to anyone attempting to coordinate activities at a city level, but across city (or country) boundaries.

The Intercultural cities programme (ICC) is sponsored by the Council of Europe; it supports cities in reviewing their policies through an intercultural lens and developing comprehensive intercultural strategies to help them manage diversity positively and realise the diversity advantage.
