Aarhus PhD scholarship

PhD scholarship in the field of the history of cross-media with focus on the world wide web and its relation to one or more other media types, primarily radio or tv. The Graduate School of Humanities, Aarhus Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, in collaboration with the State and University Library, invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship in the history of cross-media with focus on the world wide web and its relation to one or more other media types, primarily radio or tv starting on 1 September 2011. Candidates who are awarded the scholarship must commence their PhD programme on 1 September 2011.

The PhD scholarship will be financed by the Aarhus Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, and the State and University Library. The PhD scholarship is advertised within the field of the historical interplay of media. Scholarship about the interplay of media (cross-mediality) is an emerging field within media studies, but especially the number of historical cross-media studies is very limited. With this PhD-project we wish to further historical studies of the interplay of media. Despite the fact that the history of cross-mediality is by and large unchartered, the phenomenon itself has a long history, and with the advent of new media types within the last 10-15 years (eg. internet and mobile media) the media interplay has grown. The project must be historical and it should focus on one or more of the following points: theoretical and methodological issues, institutions, production, content and forms of expression, reception, technology, and social use. The project should benefit from the existing collections of media content at The State and University Library, primarily the national internet archive Netarkivet as well as the collections of radio and television. The State and University Library wants to further research projects which shed light on how research accross the librarie’s media collections can be undertaken.

Cancer Communication doctoral fellowship

Students completing their first or second years of doctoral coursework in departments or schools of communication, public health, or related fields are invited to apply to become a short-term Cancer Communication Doctoral Fellow. Students interested in organizational and team communication, patient-physician interaction and shared decision making, intercultural communication, leader-member exchange, message tailoring, dissemination and diffusion and implementation of effective practices, systems science, and social ecological models of behavior change are especially encouraged to apply.

Over a three-day immersion in Denver, fellows will learn about plausible topics that a fellow could later pursue for study in cancer communication research as it relates to healthcare organizations. The objective of this program is for fellows to consider cancer communication topics as they plan their dissertation research. This doctoral seminar is made possible with funding from the U.S. National Cancer Institute in an award to the Cancer Communication Research Center (http://www.crn-ccrc.org), an NCI-designated Center of Excellence in Cancer Communication Research.

Fellows will be paired with and learn from seminar faculty about professional, regulatory, organizational, team, and individual factors that affect communication in healthcare organizations. Seminar faculty will be healthcare providers, prevention specialists, information technology experts, operations leaders, and researchers in Kaiser Permanente, the largest nonprofit non-governmental healthcare system in the U.S. Fellows and faculty will interact one on one in half-day shadowing as faculty go about their work, in seminar, and during social times. The fellowship will pay travel-related costs of fellows including round trip flight to Denver, 3 nights hotel, and meals. Fellows will receive a $1000 honorarium for a brief paper describing a research opportunity from their paradigmatic perspective based on what they have learned.

Wednesday July 13th fellows and seminar staff convene for dinner, orientation to the seminar, and assignment of fellows to faculty. Thursday July 14th fellows are taken to their faculty colleague’s place of work, fellows accompany faculty to meetings, labs or clinics, offices, and any site visits that faculty have on their schedule for that morning, fellows ask questions throughout shadowing and have lunch with their faculty colleague, then fellows convene and with seminar staff leave as a group for field trip. A group dinner for fellows, staff, and faculty finishes the day. Friday July 15th fellows report-out and discuss in full-day seminar what they have learned about communication in healthcare systems and how that may apply to cancer communication research. Saturday July 16th fellows convene in morning seminar to discuss the fit of research paradigms to the realities of healthcare organizations, and depart for the airport.

Apply by sending (1) a cover letter of application with full contact information, (2) a letter of reference, (3) a one page statement of interest that identifies the applicant’s research interests and what they would hope to learn, and (4) a vita. Materials must be received by May 1, 2011. Applicants will be notified by May 15. Submit application materials to: sarah.madrid@kp.org.

Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence

Institutions are now invited to apply to the Fulbright Scholar-In-Residence Program.  The deadline is October 17, 2011. The S-I-R Program brings scholars from abroad to teach at U.S. colleges and universities, which can help internationalize curricula and campuses.

The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (S-I-R) Program assists U.S. higher education institutions in expanding programs of academic exchange. By supporting non-U.S. scholars through grants for teaching at institutions that might not have a strong international component, both the U.S. institution and the scholar grantee benefit. The Fulbright European Union Scholar-in-Residence (EU S-I-R) is a subset of the S-I-R Program that focuses specifically on strengthening expertise in European Union affairs by bringing scholars and professionals from the European Union to U.S. campuses.

One of the few Fulbright programs that serves institutions, S-I-R gives preference to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, Native American tribal colleges, community colleges and small, liberal arts institutions. There are many opportunities for larger institutions to partner with preference organizations. Your institution is invited to learn how S-I-R can help advance its international presence, assist in faculty and curriculum development, and diversify the educational experiences of its students, scholars and surrounding community.
