We now live in an environment where many of our dialogues and interactions are facilitated, actualized, virtualized, augmented, or completed by and through communication technologies and online platforms. Humans go online not only to interact with other human beings, but also to interact with information and data. In many contexts, we now achieve dialogical communication by integrating technologies and information, using or creatively appropriating various platforms (e.g. Castells, 2007; Dahlberg, 2007; Fuchs & Obrist, 2010, Papacharissi, 2015).

Human mobility is accompanied by processes of inclusion and exclusion. Whether in large-scale economic processes or face-to-face encounters, navigating ethnic, cultural, religious, economic, or linguistic differences resulting from migration and mobility can be challenging for states, societies, and individuals alike.

What are the various scales and moments at which processes of inclusion and exclusion come to the fore? Who includes and who excludes? Where do processes of inclusion and exclusion take place? What effects do they have at the individual, regional, national or international levels?

This conference aims to generate new inter- and multi-disciplinary insights and ideas on the theme of inclusion/exclusion. We invite abstracts from researchers at all academic levels addressing processes of inclusion/exclusion in relation to human migration and mobility from all disciplinary perspectives.

Practitioners and policy-makers are welcome to submit their ideas, and contributions that feature applied or practical collaboration with groups or individuals outside of universities are particularly invited.

The Russian Communication Association welcomes submissions for the National Communication Association Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, that focus on various aspects of communication in, with, and about Russia. We welcome any theoretical perspective or methodological approach that may advance our understanding of communication discipline, including, but not limited to, critical/cultural studies, rhetoric, media, intercultural, interpersonal, organizational, peace and conflict, gender and sexuality, political, and performative.  Submissions should not be limited to Russia alone as long as they are related to it in some way.  We also encourage panel discussion submissions that include presenters from multiple institutions and/or multiple countries.

EPRIE 2018: Media in Times of Populism (Poland, Germany, Belgium)

ConferencesEPRIE (Exchange Program for Regional Integration in East Asia and Europe) aims to exchange perspectives and experiences between East Asia and Europe. In 2018, the program theme will be Media in times of populism and post-truth politics – challenges and opportunities. June 27 to July 8, 2018. Deadline Extended to April 8, 2018.

The program is open to young professionals who are interested in actively contributing to the seminar by introducing their ideas and perspectives, sharing their opinions, and engaging their fellow participants in discussion. Specifically, it will consist of:

3 days of preliminary program with  introductory session in  Krzyzowa, Poland,
5 days of sessions with intensive peer to peer exchange on the topic and visits to organizations in Potsdam and Berlin, Germany, and
4 days of sessions with alumni and visits to institutions in Brussels, Belgium.

Target groups are young people aged between 25 and 35 years from Europe (mainly France, Germany, Poland) and East Asia (mainly China, Japan, Korea). Program participants will include young professionals, and postgraduate students in Master and Research degrees from the field of Area Studies as well as from the disciplines of History, Social and Communication Sciences, among others.

CFP Media Culture & Society: Argentina & Latin America (Argentina)

This will be the fourth annual conference organized by the Center for the Study of Media and Society in Argentina (MESO) on the interactions between media, culture and society. This fourth event is sponsored by the Center for Global Culture and Communication at Northwestern University.

Submissions should contribute to ongoing conversations about media, culture, and society in empirical, theoretical or methodological ways. They might also broaden our knowledge about the relationship between media, culture, and society at the national and regional level. Articles may refer to different aspects of communication, media, and cultural goods and services in the areas of journalism, entertainment -cinema, theater, television, music, etc. – advertising and marketing, public relations, social media, and video games, among others.

The ‘good’ interculturalist yesterday, today and tomorrow: Everyday life-theory-research-policy-practice

The word ‘intercultural’ has been in use in research and practice in different parts of the world for many decades. In daily life, it is less used compared to ‘competitors’ such as multicultural or, increasingly, diversity. Interdisciplinary at heart, like all concepts, the word ‘intercultural’ is also very polysemic and politically driven.

Our interest in the notion of the ‘intercultural’ in this conference rests on the root of the word, ‘inter’, which hints at reciprocity, being located/occurring/existing between.

 This conference serves as a platform to discuss what it means to be a ‘good’ interculturalist today. We expect many and varied (discordant) voices to meet during the conference. The past and future can also be considered, in diachronic and/or synchronic perspectives. The following broad contexts, which often overlap, will be examined: everyday life, theory, research, policy and practice. The micro-contexts of (language) education, teacher education, internationalization of education, business, health care, intercultural couplehood, are of interest amongst others.

CFP Communication, Ecology & Cultural Heritage (China)

Conferences4th Symposium on Communication and Public: Communication, Ecology, and Cultural Heritage, Penn Wharton China Center, Beijing, China, June 7 and 8, 2018. Deadline: February 28, 2018.

The call for submissions of paper abstracts of 800-1000 words is now open. The analysis could focus on media and communication technologies and their uses in the protection of ecology and cultural heritage or on practices of cultural heritage and environmental protection as media of communication. The symposium organizers encourage empirical studies that examine the practices and cultures of both citizens and institutions.

Submissions should be emailed by February 28, 2018. Authors will be notified of results by March 10, 2018. Organizers will cover accommodation and meals in Beijing, as well as domestic travel in China. (International travel cannot be covered.)

All papers should be written and presented in English. Selected papers will be published as a special issue in Communication and the Public.

CFP Globalization & Culture (USA)

The Working Group on Globalization and Culture of the Cultural Studies Association would like to invite submissions for the 16th Annual Meeting of the Cultural Studies Association (U.S.), at to be held on May 31-June 2, 2018 at the campus of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. We welcome a wide range of papers addressing the broad nexus between globalization and culture. This year we aim to constitute at least two panels:

General Call: The first is an open call for papers for a panel on Globalization and Culture broadly conceived. We invite interdisciplinary papers that explore the relationships among circuits of production and consumption, the movement of people, social inequalities and collective identities, globalizations from “above” and “below,” new/emerging media and technologies, transnationalism, and cultural industries. In addition, proposals broadly addressing any aspect of globalization and culture are most welcome.

Theme Panel: The second will focus on the conference theme of “Interventions.” We seek interdisciplinary papers that pull from philosophy, sociology, economics, political science, literature, critical pedagogy and/or cultural studies, among others.
