The Unit of Social Research is the largest unit in the Faculty of Social Sciences (SOC). Its key research themes are the transformation of social governance, social and societal processes and risks, and the challenges of well-being and sustainable development. The unit hosts six subjects: social psychology, sociology, social policy, youth research, social anthropology and gender studies. The Unit of Social Research also has four research centers: the Working Life Research Center, the Research Center for Knowledge, Science, Technology and Innovation, the Childhood, Youth and Family Research Center, and the Peace and Conflict Research Center.

The Unit of Social Research offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral level education. The unit has a joint, comprehensive bachelor’s program in social studies. Master’s degree education is given in fields of study corresponding to the subjects. In addition to these, the master’s program is implemented in five international programs: Comparative Social Policy and Welfare, Gender Studies, Global and Transnational Sociology, Peace, Mediation and Conflict Research, and Public Choice. Doctoral education takes place within the doctoral program in social research, including: gender studies, peace and conflict research, social anthropology, social policy, social psychology, sociology, social work, and youth research. In social psychology, key research topics include social interaction, self and identity, group dynamics, and the relationships between the individual, communities, and society.

Paid Undergrad Summer Internship: Peace & Conflict (USA)

“JobUndergraduate Research Assistant (RA) Position, Peace and Conflict Neuroscience Lab, Beyond Conflict Innovation Lab, University of Pennsylvania. Deadline: March 18, 2019.

The Peace and Conflict Neuroscience Lab at the University of Pennsylvania, directed by Dr. Emile Bruneau, and in collaboration with Beyond Conflict Innovation Lab, is seeking summer research assistants. This 8-week at 30hr/week (negotiable) paid ($4,500 summer stipend) internship has an anticipated start date of June 2019. RAs will have the option to work in Philadelphia, PA or New York City. The research assistants will work closely with the postdoctoral researchers (Drs. Samantha Moore-Berg and Boaz Hameiri) on projects aimed at identifying the psychological drivers of real-world social conflict, injustice and inequality, and/or affecting change in these intergroup contexts. Applicants with specific interest or direct experience with conflict and/or discrimination are particularly encouraged to apply. This internship is designed to help individuals strengthen their research skills and will include ongoing mentoring and guidance from skilled researchers.

CFP Communication and Conflict Transformation

Book chapter proposals call–communication and conflict transformation

Tom Matyok and Pete Kellett invite brief chapter proposals for our upcoming co-edited book with the working title: Communication and conflict transformation: Leading-edge thoughts, practices, & engagements. If contracted, the book will be published by Lexington Books as part of their new Peace and Conflict Studies Series. They would like to create a book that captures current leading-edge, and emerging thoughts/ideas, practices/ techniques, and engagements/ contexts/ applications around communication as it contributes to the broader (interdisciplinary) discussion of conflict transformation. The book is envisioned as a mix of shorter (3000 word) think pieces and reports on practices and techniques, as well as longer (up to 7500 word) research studies, and as representing the breadth of research paradigms and methodologies, and the novel, valuable, and provocative work currently being done in Communication/Communication Studies regarding conflict transformation and welcome proposals that speak to this goal. They envision completing the contract process by end of this calendar year and will be in touch with a writing timeline for spring at that point.
