Toronto Metropolitan U: Postdocs for Black Scholars (Canada)

Black scholars are among the most underrepresented in postdoctoral positions, tenured faculty positions, and in University leadership. Building on the recommendations of the Anti-Black Racism Campus Climate Review and reinforced by the PDF fileStanding Strong committee recommendations, and as part of a wider commitment to equity, in recognition of the barriers to equal opportunities for education and employment, TMU is implementing this program with the goals of building a more diverse and inclusive academe, and supporting the flourishing of Black scholarship. In particular, this program seeks to expand and advance Black scholarship and intellectual traditions, and support the academic endeavours of the Black community.

Funding will be available to provide $70,000 per year to support up to two years of postdoctoral salary for four (4) Black scholars. Eligibility:

  • Scholars who self-identify as Black (of African descent; for example, Africans and African heritage people from the Caribbean, Americas, Europe).
  • Completion of a PhD or PhD-equivalent within the last three years prior to the application deadline, or PhD expected by the planned start date of the fellowship.
  • Can hold the fellowship by September 5, 2023 for two years.
  • Successful applicants must be eligible to work in Canada by the start of the Postdoctoral position. International applicants may apply; however, successful international applicants will require a work permit and Canadian Social Insurance Number in order to take up the postdoctoral position. Exceptional start dates may be negotiated in relation to the permit and visa process timelines.
  • Be associated with a current or proposed supervisor who holds a tenured or tenure-track faculty position at TMU, and include a letter of support from the proposed supervisor.

Wabash Democracy and Public Discourse, an interdisciplinary program at Wabash College, is pleased to announce a two-year, post-doctoral Fellowship in Dialogue and Deliberation to begin July 1, 2023. The area of concentration is open to a broad range of fields including but not limited to communication, rhetoric, anthropology, economics, cultural studies, political science, or sociology; however, the candidate’s teaching and research must connect the intersections of dialogue and deliberation, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Wabash Democracy and Public Discourse (WDPD) is an undergraduate research and practice program that trains students to research, design, and facilitate public dialogue and deliberations on a range of issues. The post-doctoral fellow will join an enthusiastic team of a faculty director, program associate staff member, and undergraduate research Democracy Fellows. WDPD has partnered with campus organizations and communities to host dialogues and deliberations on varying topics including those relating to race, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The successful candidate will contribute to the mission of Wabash Democracy and Public Discourse: to teach constructive practices of engagement and communication on topics of public problems; to stimulate productive public discourse on campus and in the community through informed discussion, debate, and deliberation; develop civic leadership through participation in public life; and promote the free speech rights and responsibilities for every individual in the marketplace of ideas.

U Liverpool: Postdoc in the Language of Food and Race (UK but Remote)

The postholder will provide research and administrative support to the project ‘The language of food and race: A participatory ethnography of Chinese food in the UK’ funded by the Participatory Research Support Fund at the University of Liverpool. The project investigates how the ways we do and talk about food are shaped by racial stereotypes and ideologies, with a view to expose and challenge food-related racism and build community solidarity and cultural resilience within the Chinese community in Liverpool. The PDRA will work closely with the principal investigator Dr Shuang Gao in developing, co-ordinating, administering and facilitating the research.

The Department of Communication at Villanova University seeks applicants for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow, to begin Fall 2023. The position is renewable for up to three years. The position is designed to foster the professional development of recent PhDs on their journey to full-time faculty positions. Successful candidates will gain formal teaching experience as well as support and mentorship from Communication faculty. The department is particularly interested in expanding studies at the juncture of communication and race which may include intersections with practices of gender, sexuality, ability, transnationalism, etc.

Basic requirements: Ph.D. in Communication (ABD considered, with degree in hand by August 2023). Seeking candidates whose teaching, scholarship, and/or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as demonstrated in our Departmental focus on social justice, dialogue, and storytelling across the eight area concentrations (Interpersonal & Intercultural Communication, Journalism, Media Production, Media Studies, Organizational Communication, Performance Studies, Public Relations & Advertising, Rhetorical Studies). Some college-level teaching is a plus but not required.

York University is pleased to announce the third cycle of the Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowships for Black and Indigenous scholars. This program was created to address under-representation of Black and Indigenous scholars in many disciplines and fields of research and associated careers. While gaining a foothold to begin a career can be difficult in itself, too often Black and Indigenous scholars face the additional challenges of racism and systems structured implicitly or explicitly to protect others’ privilege. Supportive mentorship and network-building can be lacking or actively denied. The Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowships for Black and Indigenous Scholars begin to address this problem by providing collegial resources, supervision, mentorship, and funded time to successful applicants to seek their chosen careers.

NOTE: They also have Assistant Professor positions available in Black Politics and Black Politics in Canada.

U Edinburgh Postdoc: Situating International and Global Mathematics (UK)

You will join the UKRI Frontier Research Guarantee project ‘Situating International and Global Mathematics’ (SIGMA), investigating the global history of professional mathematical research in the twentieth century, working primarily on either Institutions (using methods of archival and institutional history to analyse how mathematicians organised their research and professional communities across new scales in the twentieth century) or Infrastructures (using methods of critical information studies to develop new database-supported approaches to characterising the infrastructures of long-distance and large-scale mathematical research). You will use a variety of historical research methods, coordinate events and research networks, and collaboratively develop resources and publications as part of the project team.

It is not necessary for candidates to have experience in history of mathematics, modern history, or other specific project fields and methodologies, provided you demonstrate other relevant skills and knowledge and are interested and willing to undertake further training as necessary.

The Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication (CARGC) at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a “CARGC Postdoctoral Fellowship.” This is a one-year position renewable for a second year based on successful performance. CARGC produces and promotes scholarly research on global communication and public life. Their work brings together “area studies” knowledge with theory and methodology in the humanities and social sciences to understand how local, lived experiences of people and communities are profoundly shaped by global media, cultural, and political-economic forces. This synthesis of deep regional expertise and interdisciplinary inquiry stimulates critical conversations about entrenched and emerging communicative structures, practices, flows, and struggles.

CARGC postdoctoral fellows work on their own research while also participating in and leading ongoing research projects within CARGC. During the fellowship, they present their work as part of a postdoctoral colloquium and work closely with the Senior Research Manager on a plan for publishing their research. There are limited opportunities for teaching that are decided in consultation with Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies.

U Oxford: Postdoc in International Mobility and World Development (UK)

This is an exciting opportunity for a post-doctoral researcher to join a research project, funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State, examining the links between international mobility and world development. Reporting to Prof Maia Chankseliani, the post-holder will join a team of six enthusiastic, interdisciplinary researchers based at the University of Oxford Department of Education. The post-doctoral researcher will be fluent in Arabic and possess familiarity with the Middle East & Northern Africa (in particular, Lebanon, Libya, Qatar, UAE, Morocco, Yemen, Iraq, Jordan, Palestinian Territories, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Israel), and will lead on the data collection, searches, analysis, and presentation of findings on the Middle East & Northern Africa and, if required, on other regions. They will also work on extensive searches of secondary sources, conduct elite interviews online and engage in conducting systematic literature reviews, as well as independently develop a holistic understanding of the designated global region (Middle East & Northern Africa) in order to be able to meaningfully contextualise and interpret numeric and narrative findings pertaining to the selected region.

This post is expected to commence in approx.
