The Social Science Research Council Transregional Research Program aims at promoting excellence in transregional research and interrogating boundaries that have long divided world geographies and academic communities.

Transregional Research Junior Scholar Fellowship: InterAsian Contexts and Connections, builds upon the SSRC’s current transregional grants program through which more than 50 individual fellowships totaling nearly $2 million have been awarded. These longer-term fellowships are designed to support junior scholars as they work on first or second projects and to be disbursed flexibly over a sixteen-month period. Fellows can be affiliated anywhere, need not be full-time employed, and can use the funds for research or writing. Fellowship amounts will vary based on the proposed research activities, timeline, and location, and awards will be granted of $20,000–$45,000

Transregional Research Junior Scholar Fellowships: InterAsian Contexts and Connections (formerly the Postdoctoral Fellowship for Transregional Research) are awarded for projects that reconceptualize research on Asia as an interlinked historical and geographic formation stretching from West Asia (including Turkey) through Eurasia, Central Asia and South Asia to Southeast Asia and East Asia, as well as projects that explore linkages beyond this expanse. Proposals that explore the connections between Asia and Africa are encouraged in this round of the competition.

Specifically, the fellowships will reward work that promises to push the boundaries of current frameworks for transregional and transnational research. The grants will enable fellows to devote sustained attention to completing first books and/or formulating second projects and developing innovative teaching materials and resources, including publicly available digital resources. In addition, the fellows’ workshops will create networks that will continue to support fellows well beyond the grant period.

By targeting junior scholars up to five years out of the PhD, these fellowships provide crucial support at a time when it may be easier for researchers to explore broader dimensions of and contexts for their work (including interdisciplinary perspectives) than during the dissertation itself. In addition, these fellowships will:
• Enable researchers whose training has been primarily disciplinary to deepen engagements with regional scholarship (and vice versa).
• Enable researchers to develop cross-regional or multi-site projects that depend on investments in language learning and gaining site-specific knowledge.
• Provide occasions for bringing people from more literary, historical and social science branches of the humanities into stronger interactions with one another through the study of specific themes or sites (e.g. classicists, historians, art historians, anthropologists and sociologists engaged in Mediterranean studies).
• Allow for bringing people with experience in specific transregional contexts together to undertake comparative research around transregional phenomena such as waterways, diasporas, aid relationships, or cultural flows.

SSRC Global Summer Semester Residency at the University of Göttingen

As of 2016, the SSRC, working in collaboration with the CETREN Transregional Research Network at the University of Göttingen, is pleased to offer a short-term summer semester residency that will link researchers to the CETREN Transregional Research Network and the University of Göttingen.

The sponsor encourages applications addressing the following interrelated research themes and will also consider applications on other themes if prospective fellows wish to work on projects that engage with and reflect the existing research expertise at CETREN and the University of Göttingen:
1. Movements of Knowledge
– Entangled conceptual histories/”words in motion”/traveling theory: the global spread of concepts from the 18th century onwards
– New sites of knowledge production beyond the academy: the growth of think tanks; digital knowledge; civil society expertise; military knowledge in the shaping of regional and transregional knowledge
– Comparative global histories of area studies/regional studies
– Transregional diffusions and modulations of policy knowledge

2. Media, Migration, and the Moving Political
– International and domestic migration and the reshaping of political sovereignty, subjectivity, and citizenship practices; the migrant as political subject
– Migration and the generation of new normative orders (sovereignty; democracy; religion; work)
– Media flows and “new politics”
– Digital media and democratic futures; media and populism

3. Religious Networks.

These fellowships are open to all scholars in the humanities and social sciences (but not the arts).

The two geographic priorities are InterAsia and “Europe in a transregional context.” InterAsia includes all countries and regions stretching from West Asia through Eurasia to Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia.

This award is subject to final grant approval from the German Ministry of Education and Research.

The Institute of Current World Affairs (ICWA) Fellowship Program

An ICWA Fellowship represents a generous investment in the future of a Fellow. The ultimate aim of the ICWA Fellowship program is to cultivate deep expertise in foreign countries and cultures. We achieve this by supporting a Fellow over a two year period, during which she or he carries out an immersive program of self-designed, independent study abroad.

ICWA’s mission is to identify and cultivate rare potential, so we are looking for promise, curiosity, and enthusiasm in our candidates. We consider whether a candidate is ready for the rapid personal growth that the Fellowship makes possible. Candidates with a passion for their project country and who are sufficiently prepared to take advantage of the opportunity we offer, have the best chance of being awarded an ICWA Fellowship. Extensive professional experience in the proposed area is not always necessary; Fellowships are aimed at developing advanced knowledge and professional skills, not awarding research or reporting opportunities to those who already possess them.

Strong candidates generally propose topics for the Fellowship that are compelling. Given our interest in achieving wide geographic distribution over time, we generally are less inclined to select projects in countries where we currently or very recently have had a Fellow. We are naturally drawn to areas of the world and topics that are less well understood and that are relevant to the United States. These could include thematic Fellowships, for example examining questions related to economic development or the environment that could be effectively pursued using the method of our Fellowships. Candidates are encouraged to browse ICWA’s archives to see the kind of projects that the Institute has supported.

REQUIREMENTS
Language Skills
We expect candidates to have the necessary language skills to allow to them to carry out their proposed project. Candidates proposing to go to China, Russia, Indonesia, India, or Brazil, for example, should have proficiency in Chinese, Russian, Bahasa, Hindi (or another relevant language) or Portuguese. It is too costly and time consuming to start from scratch, so we expect enough language proficiency so that candidates are able to function in the local language within a few months of arriving in the country. Exceptions have been made for unusual languages or situations, but these are rare.

Criteria for Consideration
Candidates must be under 36 years of age at the time of the due date for the initial letter of interest.

U.S. citizenship is not a requirement, but candidates must show strong and credible ties to U.S. society. A proposed Fellowship must hold the promise of enriching public life in the United States by enhancing the understanding of foreign countries, cultures, and trends. Public service, social activism or contribution to wider understanding in the United States is our ultimate purpose, out of a belief that the public can benefit from the knowledge and wisdom that our Fellows acquire.

Restrictions
While we expect candidates to design projects of topical interest, Fellowships are not aimed at covering news events. We do not send Fellows into war zones, or places where intense security concerns prevent Fellows from interacting with the local populace.

Fellowships are not scholarships. We do not support degree programs at universities, the writing of books, or research projects aimed at answering specific questions in a particular academic discipline.

Applicants must have excellent written and spoken English language skills and must have completed the current phase of their formal education. We do not accept applications from currently enrolled undergraduate students.

FELLOWSHIP ACTIVITIES
Fellows are required to write monthly newsletters, which are made available through our website to Institute members and other interested parties, including family, friends and professional associates of the Fellows. While the Institute has funded and will continue to fund artists, performers, and others who find various ways to participate in the societies they study, the immediate fruits of the Fellows’ learning are communicated principally through writing. Fellows should be prepared to share their experience with a general, well-educated audience, and not only with specialists in their field. Fellows work closely with the Executive Director, who serves as writing coach, editor, and mentor.

While many Fellows go on to pursue political or social causes at home and abroad, the purpose of a Fellowship is to learn about other societies, not to change them. Fellows are not permitted to engage in overtly political activities during their Fellowship. The Institute does not accept any government funds. Fellows must preserve that independence, in letter and in spirit.

Fellows should not expect to return to the United States during the two years of their Fellowship. ICWA Fellowships are immersive; a vital component of the Fellowship experience is remaining, without interruption, in the area of study for the duration of a Fellowship.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT
The Institute provides full financial support for its Fellows and their immediate families. “Full financial support” does not mean unlimited financial support, and Fellows are expected to live and spend modestly. The Institute provides Fellows with sufficient funding to allow them and their families to live in good health and reasonable comfort and to fulfill the purposes of the Fellowship.

Fellowship Opportunities
Donors’ Fellowship: The generous support received from contributors enables ICWA to appoint a Donors’ Fellows every two years. Topics and areas of study are unrestricted.

Fellows with appropriate topics may receive support from specially endowed funds, including:
John Miller Musser Memorial Forest & Society Fellowships offer people with graduate degrees in forestry or forest-related specialities an opportunity to broaden their understanding of the relationship of forest-resource problems to humans, including policy-makers, environmentalists, farmers, scientists and forest-product industrialists.

John O. Crane Memorial Fellowships provide support for study in East Europe and the Middle East.

Those interested in applying for an Institute of Current World Affairs Fellowship should send an initial Letter of Interest and a resume to the Institute via email. (Post is also accepted.)

In your letter of interest, tell us what you would do if you had a two-year, self-designed Fellowship overseas and why you’re the right person to carry it out. There is no fixed length for the letter of interest. Take the space that you need to make a cogent case for yourself. Please indicate your age, as applicants must be under the age of 36 at the time that the letter of interest is due.

Selected Fellows are expected to depart for their Fellowship within six months of their selection.

This is a competitive process. The strongest applicants will be invited to submit a more detailed application.

The McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme has been established to attract outstanding recent doctoral graduates to the University. The Fellowship Scheme aims to recruit new researchers who have the potential to build and lead cross-disciplinary collaborative research activities inside and across faculties. The objectives of the 2017 program are to attract talented recent doctoral graduates in areas of research priority for the University. They should promote research that aligns with the Research at Melbourne initiative.

Funding
The University will fund the Fellowships for a three year appointment commencing at Level A.6 in the University salary band plus superannuation. Fellows will receive an additional $25,000 to be spent on project costs over the term of their Fellowship. Awards will be for a maximum of three years commencing 1 January 2017, but the start date may be deferred up to 30 June 2017.

Eligibility
Applicants must have evidence of the award of a PhD from a university other than the University of Melbourne by the closing date. The date of award is considered to be the date of the official notification letter. The PhD must have been awarded no earlier than 1 January 2014. The McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended for applicants who do not hold a fixed term or continuing appointment of greater than one year duration at the University of Melbourne.

The role
The successful appointee will provide assistance to the Executive Dean on a variety of research related tasks. In addition to research support, the successful applicant will prepare course materials for a new Masters course that is under development using the case study method. The post-holder will author or co-author the course materials as well as assist in the delivery and management of the course, including assisting the Executive Dean in promoting his research, and that of Political Science and International Studies/Humanities and Social Sciences, by managing his personal website and assisting with his social media profile.

The person
Applicants should possess a PhD specialising in one or more of the following areas: Internal Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, or related field. Applicants should have at least two years’ full-time experience (during the PhD and/or otherwise), or its equivalent , in a relevant area of expertise. Experience in collaborative writing of scholarly papers and dissemination of research findings in relevant academic outlet is also required.

Remuneration
This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for 2.5 years at Research Academic Level A. The remuneration package will be in the range $79,170.68 – $84,985.56 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $92,629.69 – $99,433.10 p.a.).

iRights, in cooperation with the Association for Progressive Communications (APC) and LIRNEasia, with the financial support of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, are pleased to announce the call for applications for a fellowship to the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) Academy.

We are looking for national champions in the field of freedom of expression and / or Internet governance. The fellowship will enable fellows to receive mentoring from internationally renowned experts in the Internet governance process, to participate in a regional workshop with champions from other countries, and to participate in the global Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Guadalajara, Mexico, from December 4th to 10th.

About the academy
The project seeks to foster and enhance freedom of expression on the Internet and inclusive and transparent national Internet governance and policy processes through the creation and/or consolidation of multistakeholder, national Internet Governance structures in Africa and Asia. To achieve this, the IGF Academy will bring together eight national champions from four African countries (Namibia, South Africa, Congo Brazzaville, Togo) and eight national champions from four Asian countries (Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Bangladesh).

The IGF Academy Fellowships
The fellowship will provide experienced individuals with the opportunity to:
> receive mentoring from internationally renowned Internet governance practitioners
> deepen their understanding of Internet governance issues and processes
> expand their networks nationally, regionally and globally
> develop a strategic roadmap to strengthen existing or initiate inclusive national Internet Governance processes in their countries
> peer learning with experts from their country, their region and cross-regionally

Criteria for selection
Selection for the Fellowship is competitive. The selected candidates must provide a clear motivation for participating in the academy, including demonstrating a strong sense of what they intend to accomplish, how Internet Governance may help to foster freedom of expression in the long term in their home country and how they intend to apply the regional and global experiences from the trainings and the global UN IGF in their own national project.

Two fellows per country will be selected, one of them experienced in the human rights field, the other with experience in Internet governance processes.

The University of Canterbury invites applications for a Visiting Fellowship available for our Term 4: approximately mid September to mid October 2016.  The fellow is expected to offer a number of research seminars to staff/students and meet graduate research students to provide general advice and feedback. The ideal candidate will be a senior or mid-career scholar, possibly on sabbatical over this period.

The fellowship covers the cost of a return flight to New Zealand, accommodation and a per diem that should cover additional living costs for a four to five week period. The fellow is provided with an office in the department for conducting their own research, a computer and access to the university library. They are also free to travel during this period to see the many wonders of New Zealand.

FMSH DEA Programme (France)

Created in 1975 upon the initiative of Fernand Braudel, in collaboration with the French Secretary of State for Universities, Department for Higher Education and Research, the DEA Programme (Directeurs d’Études Associés, or Associate Research Directors) is the oldest international mobility programme at Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme. It provides funding to invite international scientific experts from across the globe for one month to six weeks and enables them to carry out work in France (field enquiries, library work and archives).

Participation requirements
The programme is intended solely for professors and senior researchers with a PhD, or equivalent, working in institutions of higher education and research.
Applicants must be no older than 65 at the time of their stay.

Benefits
An allowance of 3 300 € is awarded for transport and stay expenses. In addition, FMSH provides support for visa applications and logistics (accommodation and access to libraries).
