McQuail award – best article

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

Denis McQuail is one of the most famous scholars in the field of Communication Science. Tens of thousands of communication students have been brought up with McQuail’s Mass Communication Theory, now in its sixth edition and an international bestseller. Denis McQuail held the chair in General Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam from 1977 till 1997 and is now an Honorary Fellow of ASCoR.

ASCoR McQuail Award for the best article advancing communication theory
The Amsterdam School of Communication Research ASCoR at the University of Amsterdam has established an award in honor of Denis McQuail. Previous winners include Professor Michael Slater and Dr. Matthew Baum. The call for nominations for the ASCoR Denis McQuail Award 2010 – for the best article advancing communication theory published in a peer-reviewed journal during 2010 – is now open.

Eligible articles:

  • Must have been published (not ‘due to appear’) in 2010 in an English language peer-reviewed journal.
  • May be purely theoretical or empirical and theoretical, but the focus should clearly be on theory development.
  • Must focus on some aspect of communication. NB: Articles published in noncommunication journals are also eligible.

Selection
An international panel chaired by Professor Emeritus Denis McQuail, and consisting of Professor Pamela Shoemaker (Syracuse University), Professor Winfried Schulz (University of Erlangen-N�rnberg), and Professor Edith Smit (ASCoR, University of Amsterdam) will select the winning article from a list of nominated articles. The selection will be based on the quality of the article, not on the author(s)’ professional or personal credentials. The number of nominations for an article plays no role in the selection process: Each article that has been nominated at least once will be considered. Please note that the jury may decide not to give the Award if none of the nominations are considered to stand out.

Award
The award will go to all listed authors of the article chosen. The award consists of a certificate, and an invitation to the 1st author to become the McQuail Honorary Fellow 2011-2012 at ASCoR, as well as to give a guest lecture in Amsterdam in Fall 2011.

Nominations
Nominations for this award may be submitted before 1 June 2011.
Faculty and PhD students around the world can nominate articles for this award. Each nominator can nominate one article. Self-nominations are eligible. Anonymous nominations will not be considered. Nominations are strictly confidential. Information about who nominated whom will not be released. A nomination package consists of:

  • The full reference to the article (including full title, journal title, volume and page numbers).
  • A copy of the article (PDF or print).
  • A motivation for the nomination (max. 150 words). Please note that the motivation should address the quality of the article in terms of theoretical advances. Please be as candid as possible.

Nominations are invited for the National Communication Association distinguished scholarship annual awards by the Division of International and Intercultural Communication for scholarship published during 2010 in the areas of international and intercultural communication.  Up to four awards will be given for the following categories featuring work in international and intercultural communication:

*         Best Book (edited or authored)
*         Best article (or book chapter),
*         Best Dissertation and /or Master’s Thesis

Calouste Gulbenkian Prize

PRIZE NOMINATIONS
The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has once again opened nominations for the Calouste Gulbenkian International Prize until next March 15th. This year the Prize will be awarded to individuals or non profit organizations that have made a valuable impact and commitment towards inter-cultural, inter-ethnic and inter-religious dialogue and the respect for difference. The Calouste Gulbenkian International Prize, worth € 100.000, distinguishes each year an individual or organization whose thoughts or actions made a decisive contribution on understanding, defending or fostering the universal values of the human condition, in the field of intercultural dialogue or respect for biodiversity (in alternate years). The Prize is open to individuals or non-profit institutions, regardless of nationality. Prize recipients from previous years in the field of intercultural dialogue include the Peace Research Institute in the Middle East (PRIME), the United Nations High-Commissioner for the Refugees (UNHCR) and the Hand in Hand Center for Jewish-Arab Education.

AJHA book award

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The AJHA Book of the Year Award

The American Journalism Historians Association recognizes the best in journalism history or mass media history published during calendar year. The book must have been granted a first-time copyright in 2010.

Entrants should submit four copies of their books to the book award coordinator by March 31, 2011.

Dialogue award for Eco Peace

“ECOPEACE Friends of the Earth Middle East, an organisation jointly established by environmentalists from Palestine, Jordan and Israel and member of Friends of the Earth International, will on Friday 3 December receive the 2010 Anna Lindh Foundation Euro-Mediterranean Dialogue Award, at a ceremony to be held in Brussels.

Taking place this year on the theme of ‘Intercultural Dialogue for Ecological Sustainability’, the Dialogue Award is unique in the fact that it is bestowed and voted upon by members of the Anna Lindh Foundation’s region-wide Network of 3,000 civil society organisations working across the 43 countries of the Union for the Mediterranean.

The ceremony will be followed by a debate on the theme “Can Intercultural Dialogue Prepare Social Change to Address the Ecological Challenge.”

ECOPEACE Friends of the Earth Middle East is a civil society organization, conducting trans-boundary research projects and promoting cross border dialogue for ecological sustainability in the region, a fair share of natural resources of the Jordan Valley, and a just peace.”

Peace and Dialogue Awards

“The Rumi Forum gave its traditional awards of the RUMI Peace and Dialogue at the dinner held at Cannon House Office Building on Capitol Hill. At the ceremony, extraordinary individuals and organizations who have greatly contributed their time, energy, leadership and dedication to the cause of dialogue, peace,  community service and understanding were awarded.”

Award for intercultural article

The Otto Klineberg Intercultural and International Relations Award

“The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues is proud to announce the Otto Klineberg Intercultural and International Relations Award honoring Dr. Otto Klineberg (1899-1992), an early president of SPSSI and distinguished figure in these fields.

Entries can be unpublished manuscripts, in press papers, book chapters, or journal articles published no more than 18 months prior to the submission deadline. Entries cannot be returned. The competition is open to non-members, as well as members of SPSSI, and graduate students are especially urged to submit papers. Submissions from across the social sciences are encouraged, however the paper must clearly demonstrate its relevance for psychological theory and research in the domain of intercultural and international relations.

An award of $1000 is given to “the best paper or article of the year on intercultural or international relations”—a field about which Professor Klineberg cared deeply from his social psychological commitment. Originality of the contribution, whether theoretical or empirical, will be given special weight.”

Media and Intercultural Relations

“On the occasion of the international ceremony of the Anna Lindh Journalist Award 2010 – taking place in the Principality of Monaco on Thursday 14 October 2010 – a roundtable event is being organized on the theme of ‘Media and Intercultural Relations in the Euro-Mediterranean region’.
The debate, which will involve renowned media experts and Mediterranean personalities, will open with a presentation of the 2010 ‘Anna Lindh Report on Euro-Mediterranean Intercultural Trends’ which has a thematic focus on the impact of media on public perceptions across the two shores of the Mediterranean.
According to the report findings, nearly four-fifths of people questioned in eight European countries and two-thirds of those questioned in five countries in the southern and eastern Mediterranean (SEM) were unable to recall coming across anything in the media recently that had enhanced their view of people in the ‘other’ group.
At the same time, the report places emphasis on the promotion of new media formats and entertainment media, whether film, real-life narratives or talent contests, as tools to reach a broad audience and demonstrate the diversity and richness of Euro-Mediterranean societies by providing examples of intercultural co-existence.
The Anna Lindh Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures is a €7 million EU-funded project which aims at bringing people and organisations of the region closer and promoting dialogue, by offering them opportunities to work together on projects in the fields of culture, education, science, human rights, sustainable development, the empowerment of women and the arts.”
