Assistant Professor

The University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication seeks up to three outstanding Assistant Professors to join our faculty, carry out scholarly research, and teach in both our undergraduate and graduate programs. The ideal candidates for these tenure-related positions will have a track record of research and university teaching experience in the field of journalism and communication and share our demonstrated commitment to working effectively with students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds.  Professional experience aligned with one or more of our undergraduate majors is preferred.  A Ph.D. in a relevant field is required, though ABD may be considered.

We seek colleagues with strong research and teaching interests in fields such as, but not limited to, media history; media effects; gender, diversity and media; international communication (particularly East Asia); communication technology; communication economics; visual communication; and media management.  Media historians are especially encouraged to apply, as are scholars with success in obtaining external funding for their research.  The new colleagues will teach and advise in one or more of our undergraduate majors (Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising, Communication Studies), as well as contribute to core undergraduate coursework relevant to all majors, such as our cross-disciplinary Gateway courses; Media and Society; Understanding Media; Media History; Gender, Diversity and Media; and/or International Communication.  The colleagues will also teach and advise in our master’s and doctoral programs in Communication and Society.  They will also have opportunities to participate in programs at our George S. Turnbull Center in Portland.

The Department of Communication at Bradley University seeks a dynamic and creative public relations professor to join a productive team of interdisciplinary colleagues beginning in August 2012.  The ideal candidate will embrace a global perspective, cultural diversity, and an understanding of the new digital age of communication.  The ideal candidate will be one that reaches across academic disciplines and institutions to collaborate with colleagues in other departments, universities, and corporate entities.  We seek a candidate who can teach, conduct research, and advise students in an integrated communication environment.  Teaching responsibilities include courses in principles, advanced writing, and campaigns.

Public Relations is one of six concentrations in the Department of Communication along with advertising, journalism, electronic media, organizational communication, and sports communication.  The Department of Communication is housed in the Caterpillar Global Communications Center, a multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art facility with digital audio and video editing facilities, universal videoconferencing technology in every classroom, high-end multimedia equipped classrooms and labs, and Internet2 connectivity.

A Ph.D. in communication or related field required for tenure-track appointment.  (ABD applicants will be considered, but are only eligible for tenure-track status upon completion of the terminal degree).  Relevant professional background is also required.  Teaching experience, record of scholarship, ability to teach communication theory and/or research methods are preferred.

Marquette Asst Prof

The Strategic Communication Department in the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor beginning August 20, 2012. The Diederich College of Communication includes majors in advertising, broadcast and electronic communication, communication studies, corporate communication, journalism, performing arts and public relations. A $28 million gift from the Diederich family has made possible renovations of Johnston Hall, the college’s home; laboratory and studio technology; and generous support for faculty development and travel.

Duties and Responsibilities: Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses in the public relations field such as, Public Relations Writing, Multicultural and International Strategic Communication, Integrated Marketing Communication, Crisis Communication, PR Strategies, Emerging and Social Media, Digital Communication and Health Communication. Engage in a rigorous research program, advise undergraduate and graduate students and provide service as requested to the college and/or university.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ph.D. required. Applicants should have Ph.D. in communication or closely related field with knowledge base in public relations or strategic communication and demonstrated potential for teaching excellence and high quality research. Competence in digital technologies and social media and professional experience in the PR industry preferred. Ability to teach in advertising is a plus.

The Department of Communication at the University of Maryland invites applications for a one year position in intercultural communication, rank open. The starting date for this position is August 15, 2011.

The successful candidate will have the ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in intercultural communication. Interest in another research area such as interpersonal communication, organizational communication, persuasion and social influence, health communication, or public relations is desirable.  Ability to teach communication theory and research methods is required. Teaching experience at the university level is highly desirable.

The Department of Communication offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees.  Its program in intercultural communication was ranked 5th in the 2004 National Communication Association’s reputational study of doctoral programs.
