The Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a “CARGC Postdoctoral Fellowship.” This is a one-year position renewable for a second year based on successful performance. The Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication (CARGC) produces and promotes scholarly research on global communication and public life. As an institute for advanced study dedicated to global media studies, we revisit enduring questions and engage pressing matters in geopolitics and communication. Our vision of “inclusive globalization” recognizes plurality and inequality in global media, politics, and culture. Our translocal approach fuses multidisciplinary “area studies” knowledge with theory and methodology in the humanities and social sciences. This synthesis of deep expertise and interdisciplinary inquiry stimulates critical conversations about entrenched and emerging communicative structures, practices, flows, and struggles. We explore new ways of understanding and explaining the world, including public scholarship, algorithmic culture, the arts, multi-modal scholarship, and digital archives. With a core commitment to the development of early career scholars worldwide, CARGC hosts postdoctoral, doctoral, undergraduate, and faculty fellows who collaborate in research groups, author CARGC Press publications, and organize talks, lectures, symposia, conferences, and summer institutes.

CARGC postdoctoral fellows work on their own research, typically a book manuscript, and collaborate with staff and postdoctoral, doctoral and undergraduate fellows. They may design and teach one undergraduate course during their second year. They present a CARGC Colloquium and publish one CARGC Paper with CARGC Press. Fellows are provided a stipend of $50,000, a research fund of $3000, health insurance, a work space, computer and library access.

European University Institute Postdoc: Asylum, Migration, Mobility (Italy)

The Mercator Dialogue on Asylum and Migration (MEDAM) conducts new research on some of the most pressing public policy issues related to asylum, migration and mobility in the European Union. To support MPC’s work on the MEDAM project, we are seeking to recruit a post-doctoral researcher with strong quantitative skills and experience in cross-country analysis of issues related to asylum, migration and/or associated public policies. The selected candidate will become a “Research Associate” at the Migration Policy Centre (MPC). The Research Associate will work with Professor Martin Ruhs (Deputy Director of the MPC) to analyse the nature and determinants of political conflicts between EU member states about how to respond to the increased inflows of asylum seekers, refugees and other migrants in recent years. The project will specifically investigate the role of cross-country variations in national institutions (especially welfare states, labour markets, and related normative attitudes) in contributing to disagreements across EU countries about how to create more effective common policies in this area. The project will include quantitative analysis of large-scale datasets covering different EU member states as well as qualitative analysis including indepth interviews with policy-makers in selected EU countries. Project outputs will include academic publications, blog posts and policy briefs.

Rice U Postdoc: Languages & Intercultural Communication (USA)

PostdocsThe Rice Center for Languages & Intercultural Communication (CLIC) at Rice University in Houston, Texas, invites applications for a two-year post-doctoral fellowship beginning July 1, 2018. Application deadline: February 28, 2018.

Candidates should hold a PhD in Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or related fields of studies with a focus of analysis on any language, preferably the languages taught at the Center. Preferred areas of expertise are: writing/reading/literacy development, assessment/testing, interactional competence, lexical and grammatical development, interlanguage pragmatics, and study abroad. Applicants must have a PhD at the time of appointment and they should have earned the PhD no earlier than 2013.

Teaching and teaching-related responsibilities will include professional development workshops or undergraduate language classes in their area of expertise. Research responsibilities include a minimum of two scholarly presentations per year at a major national or international conference and at least two scholarly articles submitted over a two-year period.

The Department of Linguistics is a sub-unit of the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies consisting of four chairs (General Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Comparative Indo-European Linguistics and Subject Didactics [Language Teaching and Learning Research]). The announced postdoc position is assigned to Applied Linguistics.

Applied Linguistics deals with language in its social context and practice. In the context of this department, this primarily covers sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, text and media research, conversation analysis, research on institutional/organizational communication, multilingualism, language policy as well as (meta)pragmatics. Applied Linguistics is conceived as an empirically driven, theory-building discipline, striving to take a stance on linguistic issues within societal discourse. In the context of the Department of Linguistics, Applied Linguistics is furthermore committed to the common institutional goal of exploring language in a comprehensive sense (as a system, competence and social practice).

U Queensland postdoc

The Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies (CCCS) at the University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia) is seeking expressions of interest for applications for 3 year UQ Postdoctoral Research Fellowships for 2014-2016. The UQ postdoctoral scheme seeks to attract talented early career researchers with well-developed research programs and strong track records. The fellowships support full time research, although it is possible to organise some teaching experience if desired.

If successful the applicant will be based in the CCCS, a leading Australian research centre in the humanities that supports broad-ranging research in cultural and media studies. Current research emphases include the environmental humanities, surveillance studies, television studies, Australian cultural history, cinema studies, new materialities, celebrity, and media anthropology. The Centre provides a rigorous, supportive and collaborative research environment and has assisted many outstanding early career researchers to develop their research capacities and careers. It has also helped UQ earn top ERA rankings in cultural and media studies research.

Applicants for UQ Postdoctoral Fellowships must have no more than five years full time professional research experience or equivalent part time experience since the award of a Ph.D. An applicant who does not hold a doctoral degree at the time of application may be offered an appointment if evidence is subsequently provided that a doctoral thesis will be submitted by the end of 2013. Assessment criteria will include the excellence of the researcher and the quality of the research program to be undertaken. Applicants must have an outstanding track record relative to opportunity and a demonstrated capacity for undertaking original work. In addition, the selection process will consider the alignment of the proposed research with existing research strengths in the Centre. Typically, applicants have already published their work in top academic journals or have demonstrated similar research achievements.

The 2012 salary range for the award ranged from A$68,000 to $76,000 per annum based on experience. The fellowship also comes with maintenance funds (to be spent on research, travel, and equipment) totalling $20,000 over three years and relocation reimbursement. Davidson College is seeking a person to teach in its College Writing Program, which focuses on the production of intellectual and academic discourses in the public and scholarly spheres. This individual (PhD required in the Sciences, Social Sciences, or Humanities) will annually teach three first-year writing courses designed around issues that are of interest to both disciplinary practitioners and wider readerships, and two writing-attentive courses that examine the traditions of inquiry and modes of scholarly exchange particular to the fellow’s home discipline. The position will be attractive to those interested in undergraduate pedagogy, curricular design, and intellectual life in a select liberal arts setting that values innovation, service, and leadership in its students. The position provides opportunities to examine how discourse informs civic argument, cultural critique, or scientific inquiry in the liberal-educational tradition. The length of appointment is two years.

Two-year Postdoctoral Research Fellow Positions 15 July 2012 (avail immediately) at National University of Singapore

The Center for Culture-Centered Approach to Research and Evaluation is a project-driven center housed in the Department of Communication and New Media at the National University of Singapore that utilizes ethnographic and participatory action research methods in carrying out culturally-centered social change interventions in marginalized populations. The Center is global in scope with initial project emphases in South Asia and Southeast Asia. The goals of the Center are to (a) create a strategic research core for the social scientific study of health communication and social change issues in Asia (e.g. China, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka), (b) develop health communication interventions and policies that are culturally-centered and developed through the acknowledgement of the participatory capacity of local communities in creating culturally meaningful and locally responsive health solutions, (c) disseminate core principles and lessons learned from the culture-centered projects within Asia and across other sectors of the globe, and (d) build health communication research capacity in Asia by creating a training hub for the next generation of health communication theorists, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers across Asia.

The candidate is expected to be familiar with the culture-centered approach to research and evaluation, and is expected to have experience conducting field-based participatory research. Training will be provided on the use of the facilities in the university. The candidate should also have some experience working with ethnography, although on-the-job training will also be provided. Other skills include the ability to carrying out social change campaigns in disenfranchised populations. Proficiency in Bangla, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Malay, Philippine, or Mandarin will be an added plus point.

Requirements:
– PhD in the area of health communication, public health, medical anthropology, or medical sociology, with coursework in health communication and qualitative research methods.
– Experience in conducting in-depth interviews, focus groups, and/or ethnographies.

Terms and Conditions
The terms and conditions for the Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF) are as follows:
1.      Contract to be awarded beginning from July 2012 tenable for up to two years.
2.      An Annual Base Salary of $48,000 per year.
3.      An allowance of S$500 a month as contribution towards housing expenses for non-citizens (i.e. non-Singaporeans) and their spouses who do not own any property in Singapore and whose spouses are not in receipt of any form of housing benefits from their Singapore employers.
4.      Singapore citizens and permanent residents are eligible for provident fund benefits.
5.      Travel Assistance, payable once only, as follows.
*       $2,000 for the Postdoctoral Fellow
*       $2,000 for spouse
*       $1,000 for each eligible child, subject to a maximum of 3 children.  Children must be less than 18 years of age and receiving full-time education.
The above travel assistance is a contribution towards expenses incurred by the appointee and his/her dependants in re-locating to Singapore. Such expenses refer to costs for travel, packing, transportation and insurance of personal and professional effects as well as settling-in expenses.
The travel allowance is contingent upon the Postdoctoral Fellow’s completion of his/her initial two-years’ contract. In the event that the appointee does not fulfill the initial two-years’ contract, the appointee shall be liable to refund the University a proportionate amount of the travel assistance granted to him/her and his/her dependants on appointment.
6.      Foreign PDFs who are granted Singapore Permanent Residence will continue to receive an allowance of S$500 a month as contribution towards housing expenses.  The allowance will cease once they acquire Singapore citizenship.
7.      Medical benefits in accordance with the Medical Benefit Plan.
8.      Vacation leave of 28 days per calendar year.
