Call for chapters: Mobile Communication and the Asian family – Transforming technologies, changing households

This book explores how mobile communication technologies are penetrating Asia at a rapid rate, and being avidly domesticated by households in Asia. It investigates how such technologies are being incorporated into Asian families’ daily routines for work, education, entertainment and household coordination, while being appropriated for communication and the nurturance of family bonds. Even as mobile communication technology is evolving relentlessly, families in Asia are also going through a period of transformation as the region experiences unprecedented
economic growth, urbanisation and demographic shifts. Asia is therefore at the crossroads of technological transformation and social change and this book seeks to capture the mutual impact of these two contemporaneous trends through the lens of the family. I welcome research on different types of families (e.g. nuclear, blended, single-parent, multigenerational, grandparent-led etc.), from a spectrum of socio-economic profiles, that utilise a range of qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches, and which are informed by a diversity of theoretical perspectives.

*Research by emerging Asia-focused and/or Asia-based scholars whose work
has not previously been published in English is especially welcome.*

Chapter proposals are sought for topics including but not limited to the
following:
*             Influence of socio-cultural norms on families’ appropriation of mobile communication technologies
*             Time management and micro-coordination
*             Practices and negotiations pertaining to acquisition, ownership and usage of mobile communication devices and services
*             Blurring boundaries between work and family
*             Issues of (dis)empowerment, privacy and surveillance
*             Nature and quality of family interaction
*             Inter-generational differences in perceptions and usage of mobile communication
*             Parental mediation of mobile device usage

Please submit chapter proposals of up to 800 words, and brief author biographies of up to 300 words as an e-mail attachment by 15 May 2014. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by 5 June 2014 and invited to submit a full paper to sunlim@nus.edu.sg . Manuscripts should be no more than 8,000 words, including notes and references, conform to APA style, and submitted by 30 September, 2014.  All papers will be subject to anonymous peer review following submission.

Tenure Track Assistant Professor, Communication
California State University San Marcos

The department consists of ten tenure track faculty and thirteen lecturers who offer two undergraduate degree programs (i.e., one in Communication and another in Mass Media), and two minors (i.e., Communication and Critical Intercultural Communication) to approximately 800 students.  The revised Mass Media program will prepare students to understand the complexities of building and managing careers in media industries and occupations. 

Minimum requirements for the position include:  Ph.D. in Communication (or closely allied fields such as Media Studies), with an emphasis on emerging media. A Ph.D. must be in hand by August, 2014. Applicants must possess active research and teaching programs in media, and demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate level.

Preferred requirements for the position include:
The successful candidate will have teaching and research expertise in comparative or critical qualitative research on emerging media. This may include but is not limited to game studies, social media, convergent media, and mobile communication in relation to issues of culture, social justice, and globalization.  Demonstrated intercultural competence with diverse groups in teaching, research and/or service is preferred.

DUTIES:  The successful candidate will:
*       Teach core courses serving students in the Mass Media BA degree program within the Department of Communication, specifically but not limited to Mass Media Theory, Mass Media Technology, and Global Media.
*       Develop and teach upper division electives in their area of expertise, aligned with the three cornerstones of a newly revised Mass Media BA degree program: Theory and Application, Social and Cultural Impacts, Media History and Trends.
*       Connect the technical skills of Mass Media majors to critically analyzing and engaging with media in a variety of contexts.
*       Develop and sustain a research program that will lead to peer-reviewed publications.
*       Represent the interests of the Department of Communication in a proposed interdisciplinary Convergent Journalism Minor.
*       Engage with the community through department, college, university, discipline, and community service.
*       Must be able to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with departmental colleagues to support the Department’s mission.

Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Mobile Communication and Media

We are looking for an outstanding young scholar to develop a program of teaching and research on mobile communication. Candidates should possess a Ph.D. in communication or a related field and have a solid grounding in social scientific theory and research. Preferred areas of interest related to mobile communication include one or more of the following: communication and social change, social networks, consumer behaviour, economics and policy. Experience with traditional and online surveys is a plus. The ability to cross disciplinary lines is also considered an asset and work that is at the intersection of information and communication studies will be particularly valued.

Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Multimedia Journalism

We are looking for an innovative scholar to study and teach convergent and cross-platform journalism. Candidates should possess a Ph.D., with a record of high quality research and some professional experience with cross-platform news media production. A solid grounding in journalism practice will be an asset. Duties will include teaching courses in multimedia and online journalism and engaging in ongoing professional development through research, publication and curriculum development. He or she will teach in the Schools signature multimedia news production facility, Newsplex Asia, and contribute to its advancement through curriculum development and other innovative programs. Newsplex Asia is a joint venture of the WKWSCI and the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), and is designed to help students and practitioners to develop the skills needed to be news professional in a converged media environment.

Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Visual Communication/Digital Media

We are looking for an Assistant Professor with strong scholarly potential and experience in visual communication and digital media studies, and specialization in one or more of the following general areas: film studies, television studies, emerging media, visual narratives, comparative media systems and telecommunication policy. An established research agenda is essential, and specialized production skills are considered an asset, as is an ability to contribute to the teaching of an introductory visual communication course. The ability to cross disciplinary lines is also considered an asset, especially in terms of research that bridges the humanities and social sciences.
