Call for Applications: 2017 Milton Wolf Seminar on Media and Diplomacy
“The Marshall Plan and the Yearning for Transformative Visions”

Initiated in 2001, the annual Milton Wolf Seminar in Vienna, Austria explores cutting edge issues related to media and diplomacy. It is designed to bring together a diverse group of individuals representing multiple perspectives and nationalities. Attendees include: diplomats, journalists, academics, NGO professionals, and graduate students.

Each year the seminar organizers select approximately 5-10 outstanding advanced MA candidates, PhD students, postdoctoral students, law students, or equivalents studying areas related to the seminar theme to serve as Emerging Scholar Fellows. Selected Fellows receive economy class airfare, accommodation, and a food and local travel stipend, which covers all costs of attending the Seminar. In exchange for full funding, Emerging Scholars attend all seminar discussions and events and serve as a part of the rapporteur team for the event, authoring a 2000-word blog piece documenting and analyzing the seminar discussions.

To apply for the 2017 Emerging Scholars Program, please send your CV, a completed application form, and a cover letter outlining how your areas of research, your methodologies, your regional interests, can be reimagined or enriched through reflections on the history, framing, legacy, or study of the Marshall Plan to Amelia Arsenault by February 15, 2017.

We are currently accepting applications from doctoral students, post doctoral students, advanced MA and JD candidates, and other emerging scholar equivalents interested in attending the 2015 Milton Wolf Seminar on Media and Diplomacy. Selected applicants will receive full funding to attend the 2015 Seminar in Vienna. The application process is simple.  To apply for consideration, please submit your CV and a short letter of interest outlining how the 2015 Seminar themes fit your professional and research interests by February 21, 2015.

About the 2015 Milton Wolf Seminar:
This is the sixth year in a row that the Center for Global Communication Studies at the Annenberg School for Communication is co-organizing the Milton Wolf Seminar on Media and Diplomacy with the Diplomatic Academy, Vienna and the American Austrian Foundation. The 2015 Seminar will examine the historical continuities and potential paradigm shifts in strategic communication and the role of the media surrounding recent foreign policy events. Panels will feature academics and stakeholders including diplomats, journalists, activists, and non-traditional media actors invested in shaping these event narratives and outcomes.

Questions that will guide the 2015 seminar discussion include:
– To what extent is the proliferation of new communication technologies and corresponding changes in media flows challenging the role of diplomats, journalists, and activists in shaping international understanding of world events?
– How are new techniques upending or reinforcing images of authority surrounding diplomacy?
– How do informational strategies challenge geopolitical power asymmetries?
– What has been the roll of non-traditional media and communications actors in shaping these global events?

In order to encourage an open exchange of ideas, seminar attendance is limited only to invited participants and students.

How to Apply for the 2015 Emerging Scholars Fellowship Program:
In order to maximize opportunities for students and enrich the discussions, each year the seminar organizers select 5-8 outstanding PhD students, post doctoral students, advanced MA Candidates, law students, or emerging scholar equivalents who are working in areas related to the seminar theme to serve as Milton Wolf Emerging Scholar Fellows. Fellows receive full funding to attend the Seminar in Vienna, Austria.  In exchange for full funding, Emerging Scholars are expected to attend the full seminar and all events and to author a 2000-word blog post relating to the 2015 seminar discussions. These pieces are then collected in a Seminar Compendium and published on the CGCS website. To be considered, please send your cv and a brief cover letter outlining your interests in the seminar topic to Amelia Arsenault by February 21, 2014.

Milton Wolf Seminar 2011 Essay Contest:
Picking up the Pieces: Fragmented Sovereignties and Emerging Information Flows

“The Diplomatic Academy Vienna in partnership with the Center for Global Communication Studies at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania will host a seminar from March 23-25, 2011 in Vienna, Austria, organized by the American Austrian Foundation. The seminar will bring together a diverse group of invited individuals representing multiple perspectives and nationalities.Panelists include distinguished print and television journalists, media development practitioners, diplomats, and academics.

The organizers have launched an essay competition to identify motivated and thoughtful students of international relations, development studies, communication, journalism, law, and related fields who will enrich the seminar proceedings. Essays should be approximately 1500 words long and address the following question: Under what conditions and with what methods should a country or multilateral organization intervene in the media and communications space of another?

Seven winning essay writers will receive a stipend of up to $1,500 each to cover travel to and participation in the 2011 Milton Wolf Seminar in Vienna. Vienna, Austria’s historic capital city provides an ideal location for the seminar because it is also home to a broad array of media actors, multilateral organizations, and international NGOs.”
