Call for papers, IN SITU: Final Conference, Culture Matters Here. Cultivating Creative Place-based Innovation in Non-urban Communities, Valmiera, Latvia, 11-13 May 2026. Deadline: 8 December 2025 (extended to 15 December).

IN SITU final conference Latvia 2026This event will be a catalyst for networking, exchange, and knowledge-building among participants, furthering understanding of the issues and opportunities for rural creative work, and contributing to a more supportive environment for cultural and creative actors in non-urban areas.

Organizers invite scholars, researchers, artists, cultural practitioners, activists, policymakers, and decision-makers from across the world and a wide variety of disciplines to submit proposals for presentations of papers and projects. They welcome participation by the large community of the European Rural Pact, including the Community Group on Culture and Creativity in Rural Areas. A special geographical focus will be placed on innovative and sustainable cultural and creative practices in remote areas and peripheral corners of Europe.

All submissions should offer an original contribution to the vital topic of place-based innovation and the transformative power of the creative and cultural sector in forging more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable communities in rural and non-urban areas. Participants will also share key insights from their research, highlight project results, and look ahead to future plans. Additionally, the event will host the premiere of the IN SITU documentary, offering an inside look at Labs and case studies

The IN SITU Final Conference, “Culture Matters Here. Cultivating Creative Place-based Innovation in Non-urban Communities,” will take place in Valmiera, Latvia, from 11-13 May 2026. Organised within the project IN SITU – Place-based Innovation of Cultural and Creative Industries in Non-urban Areas, the conference will be a dynamic forum for exploring cutting-edge research and practices in place-based innovation and creativity of the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) in non-urban areas.

This conference is co-organised by the Latvian Academy of Culture and the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra in cooperation with the European Network of Cultural Centres, Culture Action Europe and all the IN SITU project partners, and in conjunction with our local associates, Valmiera County Municipality and Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences. The IN SITU project receives support from the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme (Grant Agreement no. 101061747).

Call for papers, IN SITU: Horizons of Sustainability: The Power of Creative Innovation for Transformation of Rural and Non-urban Futures, Šibenik, Croatia, 25-27 September 2024. Deadline: 8 July 2024.

IN SITU is a four-year project that combines research and experimental actions to advance the innovation-related practices, capacities, and potentials of cultural and creative industries (CCIs) based in non-urban and rural areas of the EU. The project aims to better understand their forms, processes, and governance needs and to advance the ability of non-urban and rural CCIs to act as drivers of innovation, competitiveness, and sustainability. Ultimately, the aim is to contribute to a more informed and sustainable future for practitioners in cultural and creative industries based in non-urban and rural areas.

This first international conference of the IN SITU project will explore the transformative power of innovative approaches of cultural and creative agents in forging more equitable and sustainable communities beyond urban centres.

In this event, organizers wish to inspire new ways of learning from one another. They aim to create an intimate environment that enables meaningful discussions and networking opportunities across research, culture-based creative practice, and planning and policy-making spheres. Therefore, within the conference, they will create different spaces and opportunities to foster exchange and dialogue with non-conventional approaches that fully place participants in the context of the place where the event is located. This also means that the number of presentations will be limited to allow for these other approaches.

They invite proposals for presentations of papers and projects from scholars, researchers, artists, cultural practitioners, activists, policymakers and decision-makers from across the world and a broad range of disciplines. All proposals should make an original contribution to the topic of place-based innovation and the transformative power of the creative and cultural sector in forging more equitable and sustainable communities in rural and non-urban areas.

IN SITU Summer School: (Croatia)

Professional Opportunities

IN SITU Summer School: Place-based Creative Solutions for Cultivating Caring and Sustainable Communities, 20-24 September 2024, Zlarin, Croatia. Deadline for applications: 24 June 2024.

Aiming to create two-way relations with the context in which it takes place – the island of Zlarin – the Summer School programme is designed to address issues that we consider crucial for their sustainability: community building and engagement, tourism and its adjustments to the needs of the local communities and, finally, care as an organising principle intertwining all the elements necessary for the growth and well-being of the community.

Organizers invite students, scholars, cultural and creative practitioners, cultural professionals and activists who work with and within smaller communities, in rural and non-urban areas worldwide, to join in! The working language of the Summer School will be English.

The Summer School is organised by IN SITU partners Kultura Nova Foundation in cooperation with the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra and the IN SITU Consortium.

EU Network IN SITU: Administration Officer (France)

“JobAdministration Officer, IN SITU and Lieux publics, Marseilles, France. Deadline: 14 December 2023.

IN SITU is the European platform for artistic creation in public space. Lieux publics, the European and national centre for artistic creation in public space, acts as project lead of the European network IN SITU, bringing together about 20 European partners.

The administration officer will be fully involved in the management of the European project IN SITU, designed by Lieux publics in collaboration with the partners. He/she will be in charge of the administrative and financial management of the project, under the supervision of the International projects manager and the Administrator of Lieux publics. His/her missions will be mainly around the IN SITU activities and the current programme (UN)COMMON SPACES (4M€ over 4 years) but he/she also will be involved on other potential international projects under the supervision of the International project manager, including NAJM, a Mediterranean cooperation network.
