Randolph-Macon College is seeking an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies to teach advanced undergraduate courses in interpersonal, group, and intercultural communication. This faculty member will join her or his communication studies colleagues in teaching core theory/research courses in major, in team-teaching a proposed general education introduction to the discipline, in providing some basic instruction in communication skills, and in occasionally offering an interdisciplinary seminar in the college’s “first-year experience” program.
More specifically, a typical year’s schedule for this position would be:
2 advanced undergraduate courses in interpersonal, group, or intercultural communication (6 credit hours);
either Communication Theory, Communication Research Methods, or Senior Seminar (3 credit hours);
2 sections of COMM 215–Interpersonal and Small Group Communication (6 credit hours);
Team-teaching 2 sections of a proposed Introduction to Communication Studies (2 credit hours);
Providing speech communication instruction embedded in 8 “first-year experience” courses (4 credit hours; 24-48 clock hours);
The successful candidate, then, would typically have an annual 21 credit hour teaching load. The college norm for full-time faculty is between 20 and 22.
Ph.D. in communication studies or closely related discipline should be in-hand or anticipated by 9/1/12. Teaching experienced, preferably at the undergraduate level, is required, as is potential for significant professional activity in faculty member’s area of specialization. Familiarity with a liberal arts college environment as either a faculty member ir a student desirable.
Randolph-Macon College is a traditional, residential liberal arts college growing to an enrollment of 1,500 undergraduates. It is located in central Virginia, 15 miles North of Richmond and 90 miles South of Washington, DC.
The communication studies major and department are new, the major approved in 10/11 and the department formed in 7/11. Enrollment is healthy, and new courses are already being added. The major situates itself in the liberal arts context by integrating coursework in rhetoric, mass communication, and the broadly-defined interpersonal area and by emphasizing the theory and research of the discipline while not neglecting its applied dimensions.
