CFP BAAL Language Policy Forum 2026 (Spain)

2026 marks 50 years since Joshua Fishman‘s foundational volume Bilingual Education: An International Sociological Perspective (1976), a cornerstone in establishing language policy as a distinct discipline. 2026 also marks 20 years since the publication of An Introduction to Language Policy: Theory and Method, a collection edited by Thomas Ricento and showcasing the leading lights of what had become by then a flourishing research field.

In his volume, Fishman argued that language policy (or more specifically bilingual education) was good for majorities, minorities, language learning, and education. In this spirit, LPF 2026 invites submissions informed by this disciplinary heritage, and those which go beyond it, to examine language policy across different areas of civic and societal engagement. We take a broad approach to language policy; we welcome any submissions related to decision-making about language use.

The Language Policy Forum is international, affordable, and accessible –– a premier international meeting of specialists with extra attention to facilitating access.

CFP BAAL/CUP: Language and Onward Migration (2024)

ConferencesCall for proposals: British Association for Applied Linguistics/Cambridge University Press Seminar: Language and Onward Migration: Bridging Applied Linguistics with Migration Studies, University of Westminster, London, UK, 13-14 February 2024. Deadline extended to:  14 November 2023.

The seminar will explore how languages shape the migration trajectories and experiences of onward migrants (OMs), that is, people whose life courses involve staying in two or more destination countries for extended periods, and, conversely, the effects that onward migration has on OMs’ linguistic repertoires. The aim is to engage in an interdisciplinary conversation as scholars working in Applied Linguistics with academics working in Migration Studies to critically reflect on the affordances, limitations, and possibilities that can come from working together across traditional disciplinary boundaries.

The seminar will offer a much needed platform for scholars in applied linguistics and migration studies to develop their knowledge of and skills in two methodological approaches to the study of the language and (onward) migration nexus:

  • ethnographically-oriented approaches (Copland & Creese, 2015; Martin-Jones & Martin, 2017; Tusting, 2020), including the ‘researching multilingually’ approach (Holmes et al., 2013)
  • quantitative approaches with a focus on large-scale surveys and respondent-driven sampling (RDS), a method that utilises social networks to produce data for ‘hidden’ or ‘hard-to-reach’ populations such as OMs who are not captured by national statistical data and who may be of undocumented status (Tyldum & Johnston, 2014)

CFP BAAL 2022: Innovation and Social Justice in Applied Linguistics (N Ireland & Online)

BAAL 2022 will be hosted by Queen’s University in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The conference’s theme Innovation and Social Justice in Applied Linguistics reflects an increasing interest in research that responds to real-world concerns within and beyond the field. In the face of a global health crisis and rising socio-racial awareness, this theme invites discussions around innovative and socially just practices in a field that is experiencing the multilingual, spatial, and social justice turn all at once. The current times are transformative and organizers hope that the conference theme will enable proposals from across disciplines and sub-disciplines of applied linguistics to stimulate conversations about the field’s responses to global turbulence and shifts. They also invite proposals to generate meaningful dialogue around current issues in language research.

The current plan is to hold the conference in-person with limited virtual options for participation. They will monitor the situation closely and reassess the situation in March 2022 and make a final decision as to whether the conference will be held in person or if it will have to move to an online format.
