Godfried Asante (Ph.D., University of New Mexico) is Associate Professor in the School of Communication at San Diego State University.
His scholarship examines the relationships among culture, communication, identity, power, sexuality, and globalization, with particular attention to queer African experiences and critical intercultural communication.
Asante has received several scholarly honors, including the Early Career Award from the International and Intercultural Communication Division of the National Communication Association, the Outstanding Pre-Tenure Global Researcher Award from San Diego State University, and multiple outstanding article and top paper awards from NCA, ICA, and the Western States Communication Association. He has held elected leadership positions in divisions of the International Communication Association, National Communication Association, and Western States Communication Association. He has also served on the editorial boards of Communication Monographs, Quarterly Journal of Speech, Women’s Studies in Communication, Howard Journal of Communications, and other journals.
His research uses critical, decolonial, feminist, queer, and participatory approaches to examine how marginalized communities negotiate identity, belonging, violence, advocacy, and social change. His work has appeared in such journals as Communication Theory, Communication Monographs, Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies, Howard Journal of Communications, Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, and Women’s Studies in Communication. He is also co-founder of Asante-Hoeg Consulting LLC, where he works with civil-society and human-rights organizations to develop culturally grounded research, advocacy, and monitoring and evaluation initiatives.
