Call for papers: 11th Explorations in Ethnography Language and Communication, University of Helsinki, Finland, 24-25 May 2027. Deadline: 18 October 2026.

The theme of the conference is Language, communication and environments. Organizers invite scholars, and students from diverse disciplines to discuss all areas of ethnography, linguistics, and communication. The programme will feature plenary lectures, individual presentations, poster sessions and roundtables. The language of the conference is English. The individual presentations and posters may discuss a variety of topics, including but not limited to:

  • the notions of contexts, spaces, places, communities and societies as they apply to physical and/or digital environments
    sustainable futures
  • ecological humanities and posthumanism
  • new materialism
  • evolving practices
  • engagement and social justice

At EELC11, the tradition of interactive roundtables is kept alive. There will be three roundtables around the following themes:

  • Perspectives on the Global North and the Global South
  • Safety, security, and social justice
  • Online ethnography

The plenary speakers will be:

  • Leah Sprain (University of Colorado Boulder, USA)
  • Sari Pietikäinen (The Arctic University of Norway)
  • Hanna Maarit (Hanna-Máret) Outakoski (Sámi University of Applied Sciences, Norway)
  • Ben Rampton (King’s College London, UK)
